Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

Intermittent CEL with code P0016 for crankshaft/camshaft correlation. Besides timing chain, what else could be causing the err? Sludge build up from dirty oil? Something else

Feels like there is a decrease in power available as well. What other signs would indicate a timing chain issue?

2005 dodge dakota slt, 4.7L 5sp auto, replaced engine at 214k with reman engine. immediately got rough idle at start up hot or cold. multiple misfire code/ bank 2 rich condition.

Has the valve timing been checked? This engine has three timing chains and a very specific procedure for setting the timing. I'm assuming the engine came with heads, cams, and timing chains installed, but builders can make mistakes.

Tip

When should I change the timing belt on my car?

The philosophy "if ain't broke do not fix", doesn't work for the timing belt. If it broke, then can bend valves and put a hole in the piston. Normally the engine repair cost much more than a timing belt change. Worn timing chain/belt can cause engine to run rough, decrease the power, and fuel mileage, and even worse, the engine refuses to run at all. It is difficult to check the wear on a timing belt, because access difficulties, so plan to change the belt at recommended intervals. As a rule, most OEM recommend replacing OHC rubber timing belts at 60Kmiles, but there are exceptions. Porsche, Volvo recommends belt replacement at 50K up to 100K depending on engine models. Acura, Audi and Chrysler allow 90K between belt changes. Ford, Mercury and Toyota up to 100K, but not for all engines. Changes in belt materials have improved belt durability to 100K, where "long life" materials are used, as "highly-saturated-nitrile" (HSN).
Timing chains usually gives some warning signs before they fail (but not with belts). Noise from inside the timing chain cover indicates that it is overstretched. You can check the status of a timing chain by removing the distributor cap and turn the crank shaft pulley in one direction (VERY SLOWLY) until distributor rotor moves, mark with a chalk crank shaft pulley to engine. Now turn it in the opposite direction (VERY SLOWLY) until the distributor rotor starts to move the other way. If the crank pulley has to be turned more than half an inch to move rotor, the timing chain and sprockets, are worn up, and have to be replaced.
While changing the timing chain/belt, it is easily accessible for other jobs, such a water pump replacement, so it is a good idea to replace other belts, and the water pump. Make sure to send your car to professionals. It is not rare for people to have problems with engine after replacing the timing belt. In all my cars I do it by myself. It is not impossible, but you will spend more time than a professional. If you decide to do it by yourself, then get the Haynes Repair Manual (Based on a complete tear down and rebuilt), specific for your car. Go to the part Engine, and use the chapter Timing belt removal inspection, and Top Dead Center (TDC) location, and put the number one piston at TDC on the compression stroke. This can be found by putting the thumb over the spark plug hole and the pressure will push your finger upward till piston reaches the upper point. This can be done by inserting a long blunt object into the spark plug hole. Note the point where the object stops moving out this is the TDC.
YOU MUST ALIGN TIMING MARKS BEFORE REMOVING TIMING BELT.

if the chain broke on this engine the pistons on this engine gone to hammer the valves and the whole engine going have to be torn apart and repaired to the tune of $2,000.. if theres a chain issue with this car that's signs that this car been neglected like the oil hasn't been change, if possible I pass on this car unless your getting for $1,000

I have a 1989 Buick Regal with the 3.1 V6 engine. What is the replacement interval for the timing chain? This car has well over 200,000 miles I think on the original chain. I am the second owner and got it...

There is no standard replacement interval for timing chains. There are some signs that will indicate that it is worn out like a rattle from behind the timing cover. If the engine has been taken care of the chain should last the life of the engine.

The only time I have changed them is if the vehicle has higher miles and the timing cover needs to be pulled to fix a problem like an oil leak or coolant leak. Otherwise they are not common repairs.

What are simne problems you will have if your timing chain needs to be replaced?

If your timing chain needs to be replaced, your S10 will throw a DTC codes that will indicate an issue with your timing. Most common issue is that, it's not the timing chain, but the worm gear to your distributor.
Gm has issue that the worm gear's were soft and tend to wear out causing the timing to be off. You can not set or check the timing on your Vortec without a Tech2 scanner to check the timing. The PCM self adjust for any timing issues from the inputs from the crank, cam and knock sensor.
If your have issues with your 4.3 vortec, most likely. It's going to be a bad SCPI issues of the injectors being dirty with carbon build or it's gone way to bad to be cleaned and will need to be replaced.
Thank you for using fixya and good luck

The "Power" sign came on on the dash of my XL7.

In my 01 there was an A/T switch next to the shifter. One position was for road driving, the other for towing or off/road. All it does is change the shift points and the light indicates it is in towing off/road position. It is in the owner's manual.
