2002 hyundai sonata lx will not shift gears automatically but will manually

Huyndai's are netorious for transmissions doing funny things if the Throttle Possition Sensor is bad. Not an expensive part that you could probably change yourself. It is an inexpensive try, if it does not remedy the situation. Also, the computers regulate shift patterns. You might unhook the battery and leave it unhooked for 30 min. or so, and see if it will re-learn shift points.

Why is it that I cannot shift to 4th gear from third gear in my Hyundai Sonata 2001

The same thing happened in my 2001 Hyundai Sonata. I read many previous forums that stated transmission shops cannot find the problem and the ones that did spent alot of money to do it. I am more of a diy guy so i got a free diagnostic test done stating a shift speed sensor. i pulled off the air filter box to expose the top of the transmission and low and behold i found the plug in the center was corroded. I went to the parts store and they wanted about $50 for the new plug and being sceptical i just took some scrap wires and soldered new connectors inside the plug and hasnt had the problem now for a year.

When i shift into third the gears grind.. why?

sounds like the syncromesh has gone in the gearbox. If you dont want them to grind, you,ll have to double declutch. I f you cant do this, get a new gearbox.
