Lights go dim when radiator fan goes on

Check fan for freewheeling (spin by hand) as it will draw excessive current if it is seizing up. Chech idle speed as if that is too low the alternator will not be supplying enough current so the battery has to do the job

Timing belt, good for 100,000 miles before replaicng. They go to 150,000 easy and it is a freewheeling engine, no dmamge to valves or pistion if it breaks

Does 1997 honda civic have freewheeling timing belt? If timing belt breaks what damage can be caused?

According to Gates belts, your engine is not freewheeling but interference. If belt breaks
damage is extensive so if it needs changing better do it. Honda usually offers a package
deal where they change the timing belt, water pump and all accessory belts.

How do you know when you need a new timing belt

Wait until it breaks. Mine has 175,000 and going strong. It is a freewheeling engine & won't damage anything if it breaks.

Timing Belt replacement- two recomendations by mazda manual

they are good for well over 100k. If your engine is freewheeling (that is - if belt does break, no valve will hit the psiton), I would just keep driving it until it breaks or never does.
I am driving my 93 Villager until it breaks. over 150k right now, freewheeling engine.

As for cost, about $400 is my guess.

Ask your dealer service dept if it's freewheeling. check your owner manual too.
