System charging at 16 volts and steadily increasing, when measured at battery or alternator. New battery and alternator. No failed fuses. Connectors on alternator wiring appear to be in good shape.

The alternator should not exceed 14.5 volts, if this happens you should check the alternator voltage regulator,If it is new, have it checked by the seller

Does the ECM control the alternator charging amperage/voltage on a 2004 Suzuki aerio? New alternator only charges @12.5. Won't charge enough to keep ahead of necessary power draw.


Some vehicles are fitted with a smart charging system that is designed to prevent the alternator charging during acceleration to free a few horsepower to help.

My experience of these is very limited but there is an ECU that controls them and the battery, charging or ignition light using information from the engine management system.
The alternator generally has an extra plug with about four or five wires which when disconnected render the alternator a standard machine sensed type.

Japanese vehicles used separate voltage regulators longer than most types. You either need experience or a wiring diagram for good fault diagnosis but mostly it is unnecessary to check the charging current of an alternator which bears little significance unless being tested with a graduated load or adjustable carbon pile.

The current output of a healthy alternator is dependent on the terminal voltage of the battery which in turn is dependent on the electrical load placed upon it. Switching on the lights should lower the voltage and increase the alternator output. If the battery is particularly good the voltage won't fall very much and the current won't increase as much as expected...

Measuring the battery voltage with the engine running at about 2000/2500 rpm is sufficient for most purposes. With nothing switched on and a fully charged battery it should be around 14.5 volts and with everything switched on (lights, HRW, heater fan, etc.) a healthy alternator should continue to maintain a voltage above that of a healthy fully charged battery (13.2 volts).

If the voltage isn't maintained on load the charging system, probably the alternator, is faulty and should be independently tested.

Charging system failed. Why is new alternator output ranging between 11 1/2 and 12 1/2 volts?


11 1/2 to 12 1/2 is not charging . That's less then battery state of charge , Battery stat of charge should be 12.6 volts , when charging with a volt meter you should see 13.1 to 14.1 volt at the battery posts . I have a 2002 GMC Envoy, Quite frequently my charging light will come on and state that I only have 10 volts coming out and then all the sudden jump to 14 and work perfectly fine


How many mile are on you vehicle ? Have you ever had Alternator replaced before ? You alternator maybe starting to fail , brushes or the voltage regulator .

Alternator is new.battery is new. GMC Yukon is not charging. What could the problem be.


Not sure but I believe the GMC Yukon has an in line fuse in the charging line. If so the output of the alternator will not get to the battery. One way to check is to measure the voltage, when the engine is running. At above idle it should be over 13 volts. Then measure the battery voltage, it should be almost the same within 200 to 400 mVolts. If not the charging line is open. Also if the alternator charging terminal is the same as the battery (12 to 12.7V) while the engine is running, that again indicates the alternator internal regulator is bad. If you turn on the headlights with the engine running above idle and the alternator output drops over a volt or so, the alternator is bad. This measurement can be taken at the battery plus terminal or the alternator charging output.

Does low voltage in ignition have to do with a weak battery


If the voltage drops more than is normal during the ignition cycle, this can be caused by a weak/old battery (Insufficient crank amperage) or by problems with the starter motor. Most auto part shops will test your electrical system for you for free and can determine whether the battery is having problems, the alternator is failing, or the starter motor is faulty.

May be but I doubt it. The alternator is not putting enough power to keep the light out. IT works like this battery power (12 volts) flows through the light to the alternator and puts it on when the alternator starts to charge the extra voltage from the alternator (14.5 volts) flows back through the light and as the 2 volts difference is not enough to make the light work it goes out . IF you are measuring 12 volts at the battery and 12 volts at the alternator then then the alternator is not charging. What you should have is 12 volts at the battery and as you rev up the engine the voltage should increase at the battery up to 15 volts maximum at around 2000 RPM

Battery isn't charging 1999 Buick Century Custom 3.1 V6 I replaced the battery with a brand new one, took the alternator to autozone to have it tested and it passed twice, checked the fuses in the fuse...


Hi Arkina, Have the voltage regulator inspected and checked. If that checks out fine, check the earth connections or have someone check for you. If you have a volt test meter, start the engine and connect the meter to the positive and negative battery poles, measuring the output. At idle the alternator should output about twelve to thirteen volts, increasing to about thirteen volts with an increase of engine speed. With lights and heated rear window on the output should be about thirteen and a half to fourteen volts. Regards John

My 2005 Pontiac Sunfire has had several problems over the past couple of months. When I was driving all my gages went to zero when I would start to break. After I started moving again they would go up....


Your car's symptoms (voltage fluctuations under load that shouldn't happen) seem to
strongly indicate that your voltage regulator has failed. The voltage regulator is the component
that regulates voltage coming from the alternator, and which is supplied to the rest of the car.
Your new belt tensioner indicates to me (and should have to your mechanic) that the
alternator and/or voltage regulator weren't able to operate properly, and a faulty belt tensioner
has killed more than one car's alternator/voltage regulator.
Your do not need new headlights. Do fix the turn signals.

In the 2005 Sunfire, the voltage regulator is an integral component of the alternator, and is
not separately serviceable. So your 2005 Sunfire needs a new alternator.

The national parts chains (Advance Auto Parts, AutoZone, Pep Boys) will (for free) administer
a "Charging System Test." Which will telly you for sure that your alternator/voltage regulator
is bad. Do this before replacing alternator, since its a pricy part in the 05 Sunfire.

Just in case, Here's the 2005 Sunfire manual entry on (a) Diagnosis & testing the alternator, and
(b) replacement of the alternator

Alternator replacement is a do-it-yourself project, though you may need to get a
"Serpentine Belt Kit" on your favorite parts store's loan-a-tool program to remove/re-install the serpentine (drive) belt.

Diagnosis & Testing - 2005 Pontiac Sunfire Alternator


Alternator Load Test

1. With the engine running, turn on the blower motor and the high beams ( or other electrical accessories to place a load on the charging system).

2. Increase and hold engine speed to 2000 rpm.

3. Measure the voltage reading at the battery.

4. The voltage should increase at least 0.5 volts from the voltage test. If the voltage does not meet specifications, the charging system is malfunctioning.
NOTE
Usually under and overcharging is caused by a defective alternator, or its related parts (voltage regulator), and replacement will fix the problem; however, faulty wiring and other problems can cause the charging system to malfunction. Many automotive parts stores have alternator bench testers available for use by customers. An alternator bench test is the most definitive way to determine the condition of your alternator.




Alternator No-Load Test

1. Connect a tachometer to the engine.
CAUTION
Ensure that the transmission is in Park and the emergency brake is set. Blocking a wheel is optional and an added safety measure.


2. Turn off all electrical loads (radio, blower motor, wipers, etc.)

3. Start the engine and increase engine speed to approximately 1500 rpm.

4. Measure the voltage reading at the battery with the engine holding a steady 1500 rpm. Voltage should have raised at least 0.5 volts, but no more than 2.5 volts.

5. If the voltage does not go up more than 0.5 volts, the alternator is not charging. If the voltage goes up more than 2.5 volts, the alternator is overcharging.
NOTE
Usually under and overcharging is caused by a defective alternator, or its related parts (regulator), and replacement will fix the problem; however, faulty wiring and other problems can cause the charging system to malfunction. Many automotive parts stores have alternator bench testers available for use by customers. An alternator bench test is the most definitive way to determine the condition of your alternator.


6. If the voltage is within specifications, proceed to the next test.



Voltage Test

1. Make sure the engine is OFF , and turn the headlights on for 15-20 seconds to remove any surface charge from the battery.

2. Using a DVOM set to volts DC, probe across the battery terminals.

3. Measure the battery voltage.

4. Write down the voltage reading and proceed to the next test.

Electrical issue


Sounds like a bad alternator, charge battery, check voltage without car running (should be around12v) start engine (voltage should be between 13.50- 14.5v) , check and make sure alternator belt is ok also.
