Question about 1997 Chevrolet Lumina

1 Answer

How do I get the code to pull up on my radio in my 1997 lumina? I removed the engine to remanufactor the 3.1L engine and I have a passlock system but I don't get security light what I try to relearn and I think the anti-theft deterent has locked me out or something is wrong with the pcm ignition switch or the security light is blown can you tell me what is wrong I have a good ignition control module, new crank position sensor, cam position sensor, total rebuild of engine and I have tried the relearn several times. What is the next step do I need a Tech 2 or can I do this without Tech 2 or with a code reader? Dave from Delaware

1997 grand am with passlock system...lost key and removed switch ...help with passlock?????

This an example of relearn procedure.
Clear all codes.
start the engine or try to.
The system long tamper mode and security lamp will flash for ten minutes
Leave the ignition switch in the run position until the lamp stops flashing.
Turn ignition switch to off, turn ignition switch back to the run position.
The theft system lamp will flash again as the system learns. When the lamp stops flashing, the learn cycle is complete. Some info says to use battery charger on low setting because this procedure can take a while. The passlock key is just a mechanical key, no pellet, no transponder. It's the tumbler that communicates with pass lock sensor not the key. If the relearn doesn't work, I'm not sure what to tell you?

Replaced ignition switch vehicle will not start appears to be computer code

Is there a computer related code which I must enter via the radio ??? You don't enter anything through the radio !!!!! Having factory service repair info so you can read how the anti-theft system works an a scan tool to pull DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes is the proper way to diagnose .
The theft deterrent system has been incorporated into the body control module (BCM). The theft deterrent is provided in order to prevent the vehicle operation if the correct key is not used in order to start the vehicle. The ignition key turns the lock cylinder. The cylinder rotation produces an analog voltage code in the Passlock™ sensor. This voltage code is received by the BCM. The BCM compares the voltage code to the previously learned voltage code. If the codes match, a class 2 message is sent from the BCM to the powertrain control module (PCM)/vehicle control module (VCM). The message enables the fuel injectors.
The design of the Passlock™ system is to prevent vehicle theft by disabling the engine unless the ignition lock cylinder rotates properly by engaging the correct ignition key. The system is similar in concept to the PASS-Key® system. However, the Passlock™ system eliminates the need for a key mounted resistor pellet. The components of the Passlock™ system are as follows:
• The ignition lock cylinder
• The ignition switch
• The Passlock™ sensor
• The Body control module (BCM)
• The security telltale
• The vehicle/powertrain control module (VCM/PCM)

Your best bet , take it to a qualified repair shop.

My key woulded trun now my auto theft system is on an my car will not start

For a 1997 Pontiac Grand AM you have a passlock-1 theft sys. Your ignition cyl has to be replaced or the passlock sensor must be bypassed. You can use a 2300-4000 Ohm resistor and connect it to the Yellow and Black wires coming from the Car's wiring harness to the black connector at the ignition cylinder. You can also try the computer re-learn process which is to leave the key in the ON (not started) position for about 10 mins. If Passlock-1 device is OK, the light should go off. If not, cut the engine side wires from the black Passlock-1 connector and solder in the 2300 Ohm resistor (Radio Shack for about $1) to the yellow and black wires. That signal is sent to the ECM/PCM telling it it's ok not to kill your fuel pump, i.e. car is not being stolen. -Tim

With my 1997 Chevrolet Lumina LS I rebuilt the engine won't start this engine did start beflore I took it out to rebuild but now it don't start and everything is either new or tests good, I think the theft...

your going to need a lock smith to check the ignition system for you, you may need to reprogramme your keys, you can key around the security by by passing th system altogether by running hot wires to a button{ like new cars that start with pressing a button} or a key key switch.

Radio comes on when door closes even with engine off

This is an obvious short or a pinched wire. Start by checking the wires that go to the door for the locks, power windows, side view mirror etc. Bend and pull gently on each until the radio comes on. Remember it only comes on when the door is closed so try to copy the shape the wires would take in that position. Good luck.
