My engine has lost all compression after alternator belt shredded ,cleaned all up and no noise at all whilst starting,has anyone got an idea to fix?

Engine lost alternator belt then had no compression or any other noise.crank and cam turns but no idea what it is could anyone help ,thanks Peter

Did the belt shredding damage wiring or a sensor connection?
The engine would start with no belt.

Sounds like your belt tensioner or idle pull bearing froze up on it. Take belt off and check those components. Hope this helps

Cranks too long before it starts


Since you have a worse situation whilst hot /warm engine difficult to start,why do not check the engine valves if are too tight and cause low compression. do check compression when engine hot.Check also if your fuel pump is working okay when hot.

My 1989 Isuzu Trooper will start but not idle or run. I found a shredded belt laying across the engine but all the belts are intact and running on the right pulleys. Any ideas?


Double check the belts. If the alternator belt has failed, the engine will not run. The alternator is located towards the bottom of the engine, and the pulley is easy to miss, as it is sometimes painted black.

take the belt off and carefully check to see if any of the pulleys are out of line and check to make sure they spin smooth and true check for bearing wear and noise in any of the pulleys cause it sounds like simply there is a pulley out of line

is the a/c working ok??? shredding the belt may be cause by the a/c compressor problems. the "chunk" maybe not, but shredding tells me something does not spin when it should. I dont know why the mehanic put a new pump on that had a problem with the pulley, it should be smooth. anyhting that the belt runs should be smooth and east to turn, make sure that all of the grooves are clean, no remnants of the old belt.

Having trouble starting car. The battery is fine since lights still come on. Found a shredded belt. Not sure if it's the alternator belt. Appreciate the help. Marcia


Don't drive the car until you make sure the belt that is shredded is not the water pump belt. YOU could drive but the engine will overheat and have a more costly problem. Two things, if the lights are working but the car is not starting. It could be that the terminals are dirty on the battery AND if the belt that is shredded is the Alternator belt, the battery could be just down on charge. Do to things (1) Find out which belt needs to be replaced and have it replaced. (2) Charge the battery, maybe a friend has a charger, if so have them trickle charge the batter for at least 12 hrs. Less there's some other problem that should take care of it.

Smoke, smoke, smoke and alternator/fan belt shredded


If 1994 Suzuki equip with air condition then please check the A/C compressor clutch.

The compress clutch can lock up on a defect ai/c pump and cause the belt to smoke.

Please check for a fail a/c pump first and get back to me.

An fair A/C pump can be bypass via an a/c pump bypass pulley (as picture below)

Hi, this noise is usualy caused by dry belts afther engine been washed or driving in the rain , you can buy a belt dressing spray at many auto parts ,spray all belts lightly ,repeat if nessesary until noise is gone....C1

1996 buick regal custom's belt keeps shredding


The first thing i would do is try playing with the belt tensioner. it sounds like the belt is lose and when the engine warms up the belt starts to expand and slips off.
