Yes it is, but just having the key near the ignition is enough to start the car. If you can turn the ignition with the broken key, hold the broken part in your hand and see if it will start. Hopefully the chip isn't damaged. I know that when GM keys are replaced, they glue the old key under the dash to make it work. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: bmw 5 series wont start
Hi, first off, an alternator would never cause clicking. It would wear the battery down pretty fast if it is bad which would cause the click if it was the battery. If the car clicks once, then that is usually the sign of a stuck solenoid. However, if what you are describing is multiple clicks, then that means the battery is not sending enough juice to the solenoid to start the car. The three things that usually is: Low/dead battery. Autozone can check and charge that for free. Takes about an hour. Next, loose battery cables or just dirty terminals where they attach. You can clean them with baking soda but if they look good and are securely tightened, then my guess would be that the cables aren't the problem. Lastly, your solenoid may be going bad on the starter.
What I would do: Test and charge battery fully, clean the terminals if necessary and then secure the cables tightly. After doing that, it should work. If not, then move on to your starter. AutoZone once again can test that for free as well as your alternator if your battery keeps dying pretty fast.
