Iveco 35.10 1998 2.8 turbo diesel timing marks

The timing mark will be either on the harmonic balancer or in a hole in the bell housing. If in the bell housing there will be a pointer that will point to marks on the flywheel face and the timing mark will be ING or a number like 15 or 17 or 21 . This is the number of degrees before TDC that your engine has to be set on for correct timing. You will get this number from a work shop manual or a dealer service centre or a diesel pump repair shop. The same on the harmonic balancer . Unlike petrol engine s where you can alter the ignition timing, with a diesel, that required timing mark is exact and any attempt to vary it ( advance - retard ) will result in engine damage . If the spec\'s say 17 degrees then that is it.

Changed plug wires now cant start

Check for the right location by turning crankshaft till at zero degrees on the pointer scale-the timing scale. Then look at rotor position: should be either pointing to No. 1, or will be pointing directly opposite if you are on the exhaust stroke (TDC) of No. 1. Turn the crank one revolution, and come back to the zero mark. If rotor was pointed opposite before, it should now be directly at the number 1 plug wire tower.

I am having problemsseting the distributor on a 1996 chevy 305. this is a new motor . do i set the pointer at # 6 or # 1

The distributor rotor must point to the post on the cap of the cylinder that is firing. In your case, if #6 is at TDC of the compression stroke, than the pointer must point to the distributor cap post of the #6 cylinder wire. But I must tell you that if you have TDC on #1, and rotate the crankshaft 360 degrees, #1 will be at TDC again...

Timeing

Doesn't matter what engine it is as long as it has valves and uses petrol (not diesel), the camshaft lobes at cylinder #1 should always face upwards. This positions the valves at it's closed setting (combustion), this is known as Top Dead Center or TDC. With this in position, all your timing markers should align on their marks (cam pulley, crankshaft pulley or flywheel ring gear). Do not confuse yourself with other cylinders being this and that, as long as number 1 cylinder is at TDC or 0* you have set your timing correctly.

Pls. give this a rating, thank you.

I have a 1997 passat petrol coughs and splutters on cold start u

There is a cold start valve on the throttle body, may just need a clean.Check for damp in the ht leads and use wd40 or another lube to dispell moisture.Check your vacuum hoses for splits as at that age they will have cracks and leaks not visible even after removing.Have you ever changed the petrol filter just as a precaution and what is the condition of the sparkplugs as worn one work on hot tempretures but mess around in the cold.

We have an 86 Ford F250 Inline 6. Where is TDC? We thought we had it, but when we set it, the number one piston is down.

Hello cnu_gurt: My name is Roger and I will help. The surest way to tell is to remove the number one plug. Place your finger over the hole. Bump the engine over until you feel compression coming up against your finger. Watch the harmonic balancer to see when the pointer is at TDC. It may be easier to turn the motor over with a wrench as it gets close to TDC. THis way you wont pass the mark. Set your fire order in the cap starting with number one . locate number one in the cap as to where the rotor is pointing.
Should you need further help please just ask. Please rate the answer as this way i know this was helpful. Thank You for using Fix Ya. Roger
