B&s 22hp engine won't start

Hi Charles:
I'd start by checking the spark plug condition and function.
Wet........... no spark
Dry............ no fuel
Check for spark anyway. Hot and blue.
Try priming carb with a squirt of gas.
Drain and flush carb. You may need to remove and thoroughly clean if gummed up.

Why won't it start after running out of gas?

Hi Joe:
Don't know what "it" is, but the fuel pump needs to cycle enough to prime, the carb or injectors need to be filled with fuel.
If it is a carb, remove the air filter and look into the carb...... pump the throttle linkage...... the accelerator pump should squirt gas into the throat of the venturi. If there is no gas, a squirt of gas to prime won't hurt.

Ranger carburetor

Runs that rough after sitting 5 years? Don't even second guess it: get a rebuild kit to replace all gaskets and rubber parts. 2 or 3 cans of carb cleaner to really clean it well and all passages in the casting. Don't bother with the carburetor dip-it's been so sanitized and leaned out with all the regulations, doesn't do as good a job as it used to. Aerosol cans of carb cleaner with the tiny tubes for cleaning out those little passages.
Start off with a known good carburetor. Use fresh gas, too.

Not getting gas in the carb. changed pump. poured a littlr gas in the carb good compression but dies when gas runs out

get a oil can the thumb operated type and squirt some oil down the petrol pipe and make sure pipe is upwards so the oil runs into the pump then leave for a while to wet the valves in the pump then crank engine to make sure petrol comes up or just refit the pipe and pour some petrol down the carb and watch it go

I have an issue with a 87 toyota pick up carburetor. Sometimes it doesnt want to start and sometimes it does a friend told me its that diaphram on the front of the carb with the 3 bolts but he could not...

Okay, your freind may be right, that part is called the accelerator pump, it is used for starting the truck, when you pump the gas to start it this pumps a few squirts of gas into the carb. what concerns me is that you hold the gas pedal to the floor to start it, most of the time an internal leaking carb floods the engine and holding the pedal down will let it start, a quick test would be to use a carb cleaner spray and before trying to start the truck hit the gas pedal and see if inside from the top of the carb look and see if you see a squirt of gas spray out, you will need some one to push the gas pedal or you can do it at the carb, if it squirts gas then the accelerator pump may be good and carb may be leaking and need rebuilding but if it doesnt squirt then its bad and then i want you to spray the carb cleaner into the carb and try to start the truck and if its due to the accel pump then after you spray into carb the truck should fire up and run without having to hold the pedal to the floor, if thats the case then replace accel pump if it still doesnt fire until you hold gas down then crab needs rebuilding . good day. hope this is helpful.

Just rebuilt 1987 22r toyota truck. Has new head and timing chain. it happy to accelerte up to 90 miles per hour. However, if you take your foot of the gas say at 70 mph to decrease to 69 it bucks really...

I would look at the fuel level in the carb and make sure it is at the correct level. This is set by adjusting the float tab in the carb fuel bowl. I would also look at the accelerator pump and make sure the membranes don't have a hole in it or spring in backwards, or is leaking. It sounds like too much fuel is being squirted into the carb with the slightest movement of the accelerator. My Truck was a 1987 California emission vehicle. (Way too complicated carburetor vacuum controlled mixture emission system) I found when ever I did a "carburetor kit", every so many years, it would work great. Since you did a rebuild, and had everything apart, I would just make sure all the vacuum lines and one way valves are correct per the diagram under the hood. There are also some lines that are run through temp sensors on the engine so when it warms up, the vacuum is cut off. My trunk had a "cold engine pump". The vacuum control was shut off when the engine was warm. It would squirt extra gas into the carb to keep the engine from stalling when cold. If the engine is hot, it was too much fuel.

With the engine running and hot, set the parking brake and run the engine to 2500 or 3000 RPM with the air cleaner lid off. Move the throttle back and forth and see if you can see fuel being squirted in or not. Please be careful and wear eye protection just in case of flame back.

I think doing a careful carb kit and cleaning, plus verifying your vacuum line connections will take care of this problem. What ever you do, don

I have to use starter fluid to get my truck running and than when running it will die in idle and not restart without adding more starter fluid? what can i do?

It sounds like it's not getting fuel. Are you in a cold climate? The gas line could be frozen. You can check the fuel pump by disconnecting the gas line at the carb, you may want to put a length of hose on the line and catch the gas in a coffee can. Then have someone crank the engine while you watch to see if gas squirts out of the line. I wouldn't use too much starting fluid, you can damage your engine, pour a little gas in the carb instead. Also, on a truck of that age the gas line could have a hole rusted in it between the tank and the fuel pump. If that's the case the pump will not pull the gas out of the tank it will draw air instead. It could be the fuel pump itself. If you have a good stream of gas to the carb then the problem is in the carb. It could be the needle valve is stuck shut, take a screwdriver and lightly tap on the carb, that will sometimes jar the needle loose. If you have gas to the carb it could also be clogged jet inside the carb. I you hold the choke partialy closed will it stay running then?

Car just stopped..transmission fluid?

Remove a sparkplug and check for spark. My guess is that the engine is not running?? If no spark, check the fuses, if ok, check the ignition wiring. More than likely you will find a wire has fallen off.
Do Not replace any parts unless they are faulty!
You do have spark, then it will be a fuel prob. I believe this car still uses a carb, not fuel injected. If so, the float valve can get stuck causing the engine to get flooded. Remove the breather, turn the throttle by hand, there should be gas squirting into the throat of the carb. If yes, then the valve is stuck. A cheap fix is to add half a cup of auto trans to the fuel. It should start if you hold the choke open with a screwdriver. Do Not Pump the gas peddle!! After about 5 minutes, take it for a drive! Enjoy Frankster016
