SOURCE: 85 ford diesel 6.9

Most common cause is a air leak into the fuel system at the filter bleed valve.

The only things that would affect starting a diesel motor are cylinder compression or injectors. If you are only having problems when starting the vehicle when it has been sitting for a long time, then the issue is not compression. The injectors are most likely leaking down overnight and allowing fuel into the cylinder or they are losing prime back to the pump and it takes a minute for the pressure to build up while trying to start.

Emergency fuel shut off

There is no emergency shutoff for the fuel pump. It is controlled from the ECM. There is a fuel pump relay in the relay/fuse box under the hood. But if you have power to the pump, it is probably ok. Having had a 1999 Dakota I had a situation where I was having intermittent shutdowns when driving that became more and more frequent. Sometimes I could restart immediately, other times I had to wait from 10-30 minutes before I could get a restart. I assumed a faulty fuel pump and replaced it only to find that it did not solve my problem. I researched the issue and found that the Dakotas and Durangos have a tendency to have faulty crankshaft position sensors. It will mimic a fuel pump issue since when the ECM loses sensor input, it shuts off the fuel pump. Test the pump this way - in a quiet setting, turn the key to the ON position, but do not crank the engine. With the drivers door open listen for a 2-3 second humming sound from the rear of the truck. This is the fuel pump priming the system to get fuel rail pressure. What then happens is once you start cranking and the engine fires, the ECM turns the pump on full-time. If the crank sensor is bad, the ECM cannot see that the engine is turning over and does not generate spark or fuel injector pulses, so even the fuel pump prime works, if it worked won't start the engine. At least if you hear the prime, you'll know the pump is functioning.

Why will my 1998 chevrolet cheyenne not start unless primed after sitting overnight

by primed are you supplying a fuel source if so then the car is not getting fuel to burn. this indicates your fuel pump is bad and needs replacing and change the fuel filter also. the reason the pump won`t work sitting overnight is that the pump can`t build up enough pressure possibly because the fuel pressure is not being held, but after the first start up the system can maintain enough pressure to start through out the day. you can have the fuel pressure and volume checked with a gage when the problem occours to verify.

Engine crank but will not start, checked fuel pump and it's not priming up not even after sitting overnight

You didn't reset the fuel safety shut off,
It only opens in an accident

The red button just flops around when the switch is closed

You have to provides details for us to suggest something

Checking the fuel pump-HOW details, test results, scan tool data,
pressure gauge,hear it run?

Spark-check for that
Check injector pulse?
Checked fuses & links

Battery any good-always start there unless you have a flat tire

If you can tell us through the proper testing that the pump
check valve has failed & you loose fuel rail pressure when it
sits, then you already know the answer & what to do

How would a fuel pump build pressure (not prime, there is non
of that) if the pump is turned off over night or key off?

I can start the motor with the engine heater plugged in,but it starts to stall out a little faster the longer I try to troubleshoot it. I've replaced the fuel filter.

If your talking about a 7.3 diesel then you have injector problems..when they alot of miles on them, they start to lose their oil prime when sitting overnight..Then it causes a hard start or no start..unless you plug it in,and then it will run rough until it get warm..only way to realy diagnos which injectors is to look at scan tool and do some different tests
