Question about Cars & Trucks

Open Question

I have a 19 horse Kohler engine. Was running fine when it backfired and quit. Checked it over. Now when I try to start, the crank is jammed. The starter engages but won't turn over. Valve issue?

That sounds like it could be one of many things. Have you ever given the truck a tune up? I suggest the following things first.

New Air Filter
New Spark Plugs
New Plug Wires
Oil Change (and filter)

These are the basic necessities of an engine. Having a dirty air filter, or plugs that are firing weak can surely cause this problem. Try giving the truck a good old tune up and see how it starts then.

You said the problem happened right after the engine was replaced correct? If so bring number cylinder to top dead center on the compression stroke. Remove the distributor cap and see if the rotor is lined up with the number one spark plug wire. It's possible the distributor was installed 180 degrees out.

Could try the crank sensor, that is where I would start. Next would be the timing & compression.

Be sure the AIR BAG/VATS fuse 10 amp, is good. there is a STARTER ENABLE RELAY up high on the left of the steering column. I ASSUME the anti theft light is not flashing?" at the STARTER ENABLE RELAY the YELLOW wire is hot in the crank mode and comes out large PURPLE to the starter. the small purple wire is hot in the crank mode if the fuse (air bag/vats) is good. the small yellow is grounded through the park switch and the VATS module (anti theft)

An engine shut not backfire unless the timing is off, it has a burnt valve or an exhaust restriction. Since the crank sensor was the catalyst for the problem, I would again check it. It definately affects the timing for the fuel and spark

possible couple of things
low battery voltage by the system not charging enough
overheating component in the ignition system--coil failing when hot

there are some magnets behind the flywheel to cause the battery charging system to recharge the batt. sometimes they come unbonded/loose from the flywheel and cause the engine to become hard to turn. I would start there first.

if check engine light is on get it scanned for a problem code. but im not sure, but it sounds like a bad crank sensor.timing will be out og sync. more then likely engine will not start, ( engine backfires ) or irregular rpm function. if vehicle starts at all. it controls the timing and then sends this info to pcm ( power control module ). have a good day !
