The padded earpieces have worn out, and need to be replaced. I cannot find a web site or manufacturer website to get replacement pads/earpieces. Can you help?

Squealing from brakes when applied (and sometimes even when not) is a common issue with many vehicles. There are a number of reasons for it, most often it is the brake shoes/pads themselves. Most manufacturers today install ceramic brake pads as OEM parts, but due to their cost, most drivers opt for semi-metallic pads when replacing them. Most manufacturers recommend anti-squeal shims and/or compound be applied to brake pads for disc systems, but they are often ignored and not installed. Older, sticky calipers can also cause poor release of brake pads, resulting in drag and noise. Lastly, worn, warped, and thin rotors can add to noise issues. Having well serviced, quality brake parts and using proper installation techniques will usually remedy brake noise issues. Just as a side note, residual dirt and grease from the installation itself can cause noisy brakes for a few days/weeks after first install until it is worn off and the pads break in. If you have issue beyond the first two weeks, and you have had them installed professionally, take it back and have them verify that the pads were installed properly.

Do rotors wear out before the break pads do? I own a Honda CR-V 2009 and was just told my rotors need machening but I don't need to replace the break pads. Can this be right?



Hi Nancy,

Typically pads need to be changed more than once before rotors needs to be *replaced*. Most shops machine rotors when changing pads to give them a smooth, even surface. Machining removes groves that cut into them as a result of normal wear (or if pads are not replaced promptly). Machining can straighten warped rotors due to excessive heat / quick cooling. These are definitely NOT considered "worn out".

Worn out rotors must be *replaced* if they are too badly damaged, rusted, etc. or if they have been machine so many times that they are too thin to safely brake the car. There are specific guidelines that spell out exactly how thin rotors can be before they must be replaced. Mechanics measure the thickness of the rotor with a micrometer which reveal thicknesses to the 1/1000 of an inch.

Squealing at the right front wheel


The brake lining's have worn away, the squealing was metal to metal (worn pad against metal disc) The worn pad will have damaged the brake disc. Very dangerous. You will now have to have new brake pads and discs fitted to BOTH front wheels to put it right. Good luck

When i press on brakes i can hear a grinding noise coming from he front end, what could it be?


Brake pads are worn. That noise is the sound of the backing plate for the brake pads hitting the rotors. You will need to replace the pads and probablt the rotors. When the brakes go metal to metal like that it typically destroys the rotor.

Rear brakes are making an alto sound when pressed lightly and espically in reverse. Is this the rotors?


the braking pads are worn, the noise is coming from the small tip that the brake manufacturer assemble on the pads to let you know when the pads need replacing

Hi we have no manuel with the car and there is a light coming up which is a circle with two lines one on each side of the circle - what does this mean?


That is the brake pad warning light meaning the pads are worn and need to be replaced. When you take your wheel off and look at the pads, there should not be much pad left. You will need to replace the sensor also since the light comes on when the sensor is worn down. Hope this helps

Skweeking brakes


Several possible causes:
  1. Did you use copper-based brake grease on the brake pins and the back of the pads?
  2. Did you clean all the old gunk off the brake pins and after doing so, where they deeply grooved? If so, you must replace them.
  3. Wrong brake pads. Some pad manufacturers list a patricular pad as being OK for a vehicle. They fit OK but the pad characteristics are wrong and they squeal like crazy or wear out in no time or give lousy raking performance etc.
  4. If the pads you removed had anti-squeal shims on the back of them did the new ones? They almost certainly should have. IIRC, they are held to the pads by some double-sided adhesive tape.
  5. If you get squeak-silence-squeak-silence... at low speed (i.e. just before coming to a halt) then the disk(s) is/are distorted. They will have to be replaced. You must not machine the discs on these brakes - there is no thickness available to do that. If you do tthey may well collapse under the heavy braking of an emergency stop with very unfortunate consequences!
  6. As someone said, the disc may be badly worn and/or grooved -check and replace if necessary.
  7. You may have a stone or piece of grit stuck between a pad and a disc. If so & it's worn a groove in the disc,you will need to replace both disc and pad.
  8. Make sure you torqued any brake bolts correctly and that you put thread sealant on them. Failure to do so can lead to them loosening in normal use. The brakes may squeak for a while if this happens but then things can get much worse...
