Once the tires are removed then the drums are now removable. the break sues may be opened and holding the drum on. You will need to tap from side to side with a hammer as you pull the drum off. Be patient this may not come right off. You will need to work with it for a bit. Just remember to make sure it comes off evin. Good luck.

Usually the brake shoes are to expanded to just pull off, one must locate the adjustment hole which should have a rubber plug (often missing) elongated oval shape about an inch
behind drum , around 6 or 12 oclock( depending on model). there is a spur gear. with a flat screwdriver, or modified bent one; turn spur to loosen brake pads.if getting tight u r going the wrong way.

if the orginal drums there might be a lip of rust and metal buildup that needs to be cleaned off. try also backing the adjuster off to allow the drum to go over the shoes, do the shoes look the same as the old ones, just more materal? Don't forget to adjust the shoes back to the drum so you gte a good pedal feel, and the rear brakes will work properly

My rear brakes are locking up way before the fronts. I have replaced the master cylnder and propotioning valves, problem is still there. would the 4-way connector for the rear brakes do this if it were bad...

The rear brakes engage when the power or pressure going through the lines are equal. Normally that occurs when the pads and or shoes touch the rotors and or the drums, then the brakes work smoothly. A clog or air (which is more compressible than fluid) makes the balancing a problem and can cause one or more wheels brake differently than the others.

When the car is cold go to drive off it sounds

As you apply your car brakes, your brake pads/shoes wear against the brake rotors/drums. Rear brakes usually have brake drums. As your brake shoe linings wear (as would be the case for your car), the brake linings from the brake shoes have worn down to metal and they wear into the metal of your brake drums. After you park the car at night, the natural moisture in the air facilitates an oxidation (rusting) process along your brake drums. When you get in your car and take off in the morning, you have a light layer of rust that gets scraped off by your worn brake shoes. This is what is causing that annoying noise you hear in the morning (or after the car has been parked for hours). Simply put, you need a rear brake job. They will also check your front brakes and can let you know how much life you have left up front. If you continue to drive around like this, you'll end up ruining your rear brake drums and this will quickly become more expensive. When you have a rear brake drum job completed, they will likely "turn" your rear brake drums - which means they will put the drums on a mechanical lathe that will scrape any uneven surface into one congruous even surface.
