There is a way to bypass it but by the time u get someone who knows what they are doing to set it up, u will be wishing u just went to the dealer for a replacement key. An 06 Buick key is more expensive than a regular key, maybe $25 but it's nothing like a Porsche key at $600 or a Ferrari key at a few thousand $.

No you can't bypass anti-theft systems as they are designed to stop exactly what you are trying to do.

Do you mean a 'valet key' that will just open the doors and glove box? Rather than a full starting key. I have never heard of a 'passkey' on a vehicle.

Contact a dealership with the vehicle VIN number and they will make you a key.that has the anti-theft chip in it. They aren't cheap but it is the only way if you have lost the original.

Testimonial: "thanks was asking for a friend and I don't think she ever had a key with a chip or she said she didn't. She's broke and the car needs a new motor anyhow. Probably won't be fixed for a while."

Do you know if it started before with the key she has? if she has had a battery disconnect, the chip in the key may have become unpaired. She can re-pair it, by disconnecting the battery overnight, then put the key in the ignition, reconnect the battery. Wait 15 minutes and try starting it.

The chip is tiny, you can't see it. It is energised by a ciruit in the ignition lock where there is the escond chip. The chips have to be paired and then the Engine Control Module releases power to the starter and ignition system.

GM Passkey Security Systems: What You NEED To Know. Written by NEWROCKIES Inc., February 7, 2014, GM Passkey, GM VATS
Back in 1986 the GM Passkey security systems, also known as immobilizers, were introduced. In doing so, an expensive was implanted in each and every one of the affected vehicles. Given the impact of the GM Passkey systems in the years since they were introduced, it's not really clear whether the intention was really to provide additional security, or to generate a new revenue stream.

GM PASSKey goes by many names

Over the years, GM has come up with a number of catchy names for these systems:
  • Vehicle Anti-Theft System (VATS)
  • Personal Anti-theft Security System (PASSkey). To be precise, GM PASSkey I, PASSkey II, and - count them - PASSkey III.
  • PASSlock. After all, what good is a key without a lock?

The disabling effect of GM PASSkey Systems

In spite of the efforts to make the systems, generally known in the industry as PASSkey Systems, sound effective and ever more advanced, they are really all pretty much the same.
It doesn't really matter if the vehicle's PASSkey System is controlled by a resistor in the key, by the Theft Deterrent Module (TDM), or by the Body Control Module (BDM).
One of the key attributes that all the GM PASSkey Security Systems share is that they systematically end up immobilizing cars, alright, making it impossible for their owners to start them!
Yes, the many versions may all look different, but they are all based on the same simple idea - so simple, in fact, that you could argue it's not a suitable foundation for building a true security system.
Most importantly, they all end up immobilizing the host vehicle permanently and often before it is even 7 years old. In all cases, your friendly dealer will ask at least $1,000 to fix the problem - which will invariably strike again after some more time.
But wait a minute... what's a car dealership's core business? It's not repairing obscure, crippling vehicle problems, at a reasonable price. It's selling you a new vehicle, as often as humanly possible.
So even if your dealership were inclined to help you repair or replace the GM PASSkey Security System... well, what a coincidence, many of all those versions introduced over the years have been completely discontinued.
In the meantime, your car still won't start, and that won't change unless you have a way to disable or bypass the GM PASSkey System, and so far... you don't. Nor do you have time to figure it out. And your time is money. Money on top of the taxpayer-funded bailout of GM in both the USA and Canada.
So what do you do end up doing? Maybe you junk the lame Chevy. Then you take out yet another loan to buy another one. That's a perfectly happy ending to this story.... for the dealer, for GM, and for the bank.

Don't get me wrong! What I hate is Passkey, not GM!

Look, don't get me wrong. I love GM cars. Most of all, I love Buicks! I love the sound of the engine, the understated attitude, the size.... In fact, I love them so much, that I own two of them! You can even read about
how I saved my '95 Buick LeSabre from the PASSkey trap. And I was recently lucky enough to get my hands on a rich gold 1970 Buick Electra in mint condition, no GM PASSkey Security System in that one, thank you very much!

An ounce of prevention....

Is worth a ton of cure. You remember that saying.
Remove the GM PASSkey "Security" System before it gets a chance to take out your vehicle. Seriously! Even (or especially) if it's still starting every time, just do a full bypass of the PASSkey System with the NEWROCKIES Inc PRO Module and save yourself a great deal of money, time, and aggravation.
And if your vehicle is having trouble starting - trouble that cannot be traced to the usual easy suspects, like the battery or starter motor, get it

I have just recently got a 98 grand prix. When i got it the remote that came with it didnt work, so i replaced the battery and try it, i was able to lock it but not unlock it, and now the alarm is active....

Put key in ignition, turn forward two clicks (to on). Leave for 10 minutes. Then turn key off, then try to start. Did it reset the security?

If you want to disable the security, entirely bypass it and never worry again about passkey and all its problems, there is a firm that sells a module , easily installed, cost is $190 (vs. about $1000 for the dealer to work on and replace expensive parts in the passkey system). The module mimics the passkey system in signals to the computer, allowing the start circuit and ignition circuit to not be interrupted by passkey. The firm is at newrockies.com. Or check this site from a disgruntled Buick owner. It has a link to the newrockies site:

I own a 1996 buick regal custom. Diagnostic machine says trouble code 305. I have replaced all 6. Spark plugs but my car still shuts off.

It's when the security light starts flashing that the infamous "chip" in the key becomes a nightmare to many. Gradually the car begins not cranking anymore or if it cranks it would start and die in a second. Randomly it will do this more and more often until it won't start anymore. VATS, PASSkey and Passlock immobilizer systems are killing cars all over North America, they have a short lifespan and are certainly more effective against owners than thieves. Here is how you save your car
1st trick, Try a spare key that is newer or used less. The pins wear down and so do the keys causing security fail. 2nd trick, (if not starting) turn the key forward 2 clicks till right before it would normally start, leave like that for 10 minutes. ( no less ) After 10 minutes, turn key back then forward and your car might start. I did this in my regal for more than a year. If its shutting down while running, im sorry i have no quick fix... If anything on this page helps you, please remember to comment or give me a thumbs up on the myfixya sight so i can have a better rating to help more people on this. Thanks

Cheap fix: Bypass the chip in your key. Temporary, but effective. Until the TDM (theft deterrent module) in the dash poops out, then you're kinda screwed. I was told that these types of key security systems have a 7-10 year life span. Sucks for us. This link explains the "Key Issue" pretty well.

Never worry again fix: Bypass the whole VATS/Passlock/passkey I or passkey II system entirely. Literally take it out, and throw it away. I just did this in my Regal. Took about an hour. Took longer to find the thing than it did to fix the problem. They sell a unit for 200 bucks to totally bypass this system FOREVER. life time-money back and all that. Finally did this in my car. Well worth the 200 if you've looked into getting this replaced... Anywhere from 600-1000 bucks. If you do buy this, please purchase it thru this link. The cost is the same, but i get credit for the sale and im trying to earn my money back, as you will be able to do if you buy fron NewRockies and join the free affiliate program. Thanks

1999 Buick regal starts then dies

It's that infamous "chip" in the key that becomes a nightmare to many. The security light may or may not start flashing. Sometimes it stays on steady. Gradually the car begins not cranking anymore or if it cranks it will start and die in a second. Randomly it will do this more and more often until it won't start anymore. SECURITY LIGHT COMES ON AND WILL DISABLE START UP IF YOU TURN CAR OFF AND WONT START AFTER A PERIOD OF TIME 1997 LESABRE

It's when the security light starts flashing that the infamous "chip" in the key becomes a nightmare to many.
Gradually the car begins not cranking anymore or if it cranks it would start and die in a second. Randomly it will
do this more and more often until it won't start anymore. VATS, PASSkey and Passlock immobilizer systems are
killing cars all over North America, they have a short lifespan and are certainly more effective against owners
than thieves. Here is how you save your car
1st trick, (if not starting) turn the key forward 2 clicks till right before it would normally start, leave like
that for 10 minutes. ( no less ) After 10 minutes, turn key back then forward and your car might start. I did this
in my regal for more than a year. If its shutting down while running, im sorry i have no quick fix... If anything
on this page helps you, please remember to comment or give me a thumbs up on the myfixya sight so i can have a
better rating to help more people on this. You can also Chat with me now as i have moved up in the myfixya world.
Thanks

Cheap fix: Bypass the chip in your key. Temporary, but effective. Until the TDM (theft deterrent module) in the
dash poops out, then you're kinda screwed. I was told that these types of key security systems have a 7-10 year
life span. Sucks for us. This link explains the "Key Issue" pretty well.

Never worry again fix: Bypass the whole VATS/Passlock/passkey I or passkey II system entirely. Literally take it
out, and throw it away. I just did this in my Regal. Took about an hour. Took longer to find the thing than it did
to fix the problem. For a list of cars effected by this problem. See the NEWROCKIES link on the right side of
their page......... They sell a unit for 200 bucks to totally bypass this system FOREVER. life time-money back and
all that. Finally did this in my car. Well worth the 200 if you've looked into getting this replaced... Anywhere
from 600-1000 bucks. If you do buy this, please purchase it thru this link. The cost is the same, but i get credit
for the sale and im trying to earn my money back, as you will be able to do if you buy fron NewRockies and join the
free affiliate program. Thanks

----- With this fix, you can take that whole Vats, passlock, passkey **** system out of your car all together. Good
info on both sites.

It works for:
Any GM or Isuzu Vehicle with VATS or PASSKey or PASSLock security systems.
If your car has the chip in the key or in the lock cylinder, then you can save it with this Full Bypass.
