SOURCE: 1999 ford taurus starter will not engage

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

To my knowledge, you assumption is correct on most designs. That wire should go to the ignition switch and will be hot when key is in START. However, same wire often would be connected first to a relay that is interlocked with some conditions/status other then key to START. They would be:

  • automatic transmission should be in neutral/park with light indicated;
  • alarm/security/immobilizer is inactive/OFF.
Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

Car was running, electrical wire burning smell, starter makes grinding noise, with the car running, stop the car, starter keeps making grinding noise, with the car turned off, ABS and trac control

You have the polarity of the battery backward somewhere. Did you replace the starter and hook it up backwards. Difficult but possible. Check your positive and negative on the battery itself.

I have a 1976 jeep j10. I have replaced the starter, starter solenoid, ignition module, both battery cables(positive, negative), cable from starter to starter solenoid, coil, cap and rotar. it will click...

Could be: a) starter cannot turn the motor flywheel (motor frozen or jammed)
or b) the battery is weak (not enough power to crank the motor)

Turn the dome light on and see if it is bright, see if light diminishes completely when engaging starter (high current drawn by starter).

Try to turn engine by pulling the alternator belt with transmission in neutral to see if motor is jammed. Or engage in a high gear and push the car and see if motor turns.

If motor is not frozen, jump and boost the battery if you suspect weak battery and see if you have the same problem.

Kohler courage 6.5hp wont start?

Could be a short in the coil for the sparkplug. Check the magneto- pull the plug wire off the spark plug and hold it close to the frame of the while someone tries to start it. Keep all parts of your body clear of the mower- only hold the sparkplug wire. When the motor turns over, verify spark from the wire to the frame. If no spark, you likely have a bad magneto coil. If you have a good spark, try taking the air filter off and use some engine starter fluid (not much) and then try and start again. If it starts and runs for a second with the starter fluid, you probably have a problem with your fuel not getting in, which leads to troubleshooting the carb and intake.

My car won't start as if the battery is dead, however, the battery charger says it's fully charged.

check all fuses yet.?

your battery charger is not capable of testing any battery, unless it has a load bank built in, i bet yours dont.

so its really not a no start its a no crank.
no car starts, or runs or sustains, unless cranked,
(my in m/t car so can be push started or gravity started)

so why not use jumper cables. this ends 1/2 the guessing here.
it cranks ok, yes? that means the battery was bad, or only discharged
if yes, get battery load bank tested. (all autostores do this for free)
NO crankl
then we next hot wire the starter solenoid.
it cranks fast (engine) the starter is good and the key line is bad.
it dont crank hot wired, the starter is bad engine seized.
now see here all the tricks for fooling the key line.
see em'?
http://www.fixkick.com/nocrank.html#tricks

and the hot wire, method in vivid details.
each step , solves this riddle. no matter the cause.

06 4.0 v6 tundra won't start tried jumping it it just clicks once I unplugged the cables no power?

jumped with other car running?
if it clicks,
we next hot wire the starter solenoid,
if it clicks now with good battery (or running jump), it's a
1: bad starter. or 2: seized engine (turn by hand? yet)
if it cranks fast now hot wired, the KEY line is dead
ask how to fix either.

I had this happen last month. It was my starter. My previous cars would miss and catch, letting me know the starter was finished, but this one just totally died, I had power for lights and gages moved, but would not start.

Engine won't start, just clicks, wouldn't start even after trying to jump start

battery is dead try to pair of jumper cables connected the same way as a single jumper cable this increases the cross sectional area of the wire causing more current flow

TEST POWER LEADS TO STARTER FOR POWER
AT STARTER (BATTERY POSITIVE TO STARTER BATTERY NEGATIVE TO ENGINE BLOCK)
THEN TEST FOR SIGNAL POWER TO SELENOIDE ON STARTER
(KEY TURNED TO START POWER SHOULD GO TO SELENOIDE)
IF NO POWER TO SIGNAL WIRE CHECK FUSES AND RELAYS
ON STARTER CIRCUIT
IF THIS CHECKS OUT MAY BE AUTO TRANSMISSION NUTRAL PARK SWITCH
TRY TO START IN NUTRAL OR WHILE SHIFTING TRUE GEARS SLOWLY WITH SHIFTER

Starter issues with 98 Ford Windstar (3.8)

one problem that the 98 winstars ( 3,8L ) are prone to is the transmission range sensor. they are badly located and not well sealed. As a result corosion...
The starter solenoid wire ( red/ light blue ) runs throught the range sensor before reaching the ignition switch.
Try shifting back and forth between Park and L1 rapedly at least 5, 6 times and then try starting in Neutral.
If it starts the TRS is easy to replace and accesible.
( The TRS is also responsible for the transmission going into irradical kick down mode )
