Until you can describe the problem that requires a replacement rack and pinion or a replacement part there is no one here that can advise you
just keep going back to the dealer as the parts are under warranty
take the issue up with GM technicians in the head office and bypass the dealership

please read the edited details. Im sick of driving 20 miles and calling a friend to get me then waiting half a week for the repair, which works, until i arrive at home and the same problem resurfaces.

there should be no pressure in a reservoir indicates a problem hose or incorrect hose connections at the rack valve body
It is understood the frustrations you are suffering so raise the issue with the service dealer and get a order to take it to an accredited power steering professional shop for a proper fix
again take it up with GM head quarters as the dealer service is non existent.

sorry, heres the recall - Certain passenger vehicles and mini vans have lower pinion bearings in the power rack and pinion assembly in which the retainer tabs were not crimped properly. These and some other retainers used in vehicles assembled between January 1, 1996 and October 31, 1997, could fail and permit the ball bearings to escape

Consequence: If this occurs, the pinion shaft can be forced upward during left turns and back down as the steering wheel is moved back and to the right. If the pinion shaft moves further, the driver will need to exert more effort to turn the steering wheel, similar to a vehicle without power assisted steering. If the pinion shaft moves even further, the driver will require much higher effort to turn left and may not be able to turn the wheel as much as intended. With the maximum pinion shaft movement, which requires internal gear component damage, the driver can encounter high resistance to turning left, followed by unintended power assist to the right. In any of these conditions, a crash could occur.

so -is the dealer fitting faulty rack and pinions? time to start pushing the issue to get it all cleared up
remember that the dealer is there to provide a service to you and in this instance , there is no service and it is a safety issue that needs addressing

Thank you bill, Ill raise some hell tomorrow when I can, Hopefully they will outsource and get this problem fixed. I may note that the same mechanic did the repairs both times. Ill be back to let ya know if it gets fixed. according to paperwork, both rack and pinions were brand new, and gear boxes were rebuilt.

remember that if the dealer argues and gets stroppy you can go straight to the headquarters at GM and report the whole episode
personally , if it was my shop , I would move heaven and hell to fix the problem simply because a happy customer will come back to buy a new car from me . I doubt if you will buy another GM product after this

Just sent an email to gm headquarters for their mechanics. Albeit they probably know I couldn't afford a new GM product, I would hope they would just honor the recall and my safety. As I said before, Thank you dearly for the advice and Ill get back to you with the BS they sell me.

if you put the hose back on and put new fluid in it and it it is still hard to turn which means you pump prob went bad , make sure you have enough fluid in it first, you could have blown you rack and pinion but not likely

Are all fuel pumps from 97 Pontiac grand prix compatible with fuel pump for a 97 Pontiac grand prix GTP super

No.
The only pump that will work in a GTP model is the pump for that model. And there are more than one tag number for the GTP.
Flow rates can be anything between 20 and 60 GPM.
You have to match the tag code for your car.

87 cadillac power steering hard to the left? and backing up the steering is hard (left turn)? ok when running down the road..whats up with this and ball park cost for the fix? does this car have rack and...

could be that your rack and pinion is going out try draining the power sterring fluid and make sure you know how much came out and then put in some fulid and to top it off put in some Seafoam trans tune and drive it around for about 30 to 50 minutes and that should fix the problem it beats buying a new rack and pinion their expensive

My 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP has a power steering leak but seems to work well. my mechanic wants to replace the whole rack and pinion, but that seems extensive for a leak. any suggestions?

Anytime a power steering compononent is leaking it requires replacement. whether or not you choose to replace it is up to you. if you lose all power steering fluid you will lose your power assist however mechanical steering ability is still maintained.

2003 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP Rocker Panel Issue

There are some awesome adhesives on the market. I am thinking about one for boats and just remember "1500" as part of the name. With marine products you will not have any problems with moisture separating it so car washes will be okay.
