Instrument Panel goes on and off, as do headlights

My 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee instrument panel seems to have a short. The lights work sometimes and a bump of the dash sometimes helps. Sometimes prsseing in the instrument panel dimmer helps. Last night the headlights went out and wont come back on.

You have to remove the panel to check onthe connections behind it, also check the headlights switch, they tend to burn out.

I have headlights, brake lights but no parking, tail or instrument panel lights. all bulbs new. I was told it was the headlight switch. Could it?

Your problem does sound like the switch, because there is a dimmer for the dash lights in the switch.

Where is the fuse box located in a 1996 jeep grand cherokee? For the dash. The automatic windows, locks, gas gage and speedometer do not work.

The fuse panel is found on the passenger side of the vehicle. Open the passenger side door and you should see a "fuse access door" on the side of the instrument panel/dash just under the vent.

1996 jeep grand cherokee, interior lights wn't shutoff

Have you tried checking the dimmer switch for your instrument panel? I believe if the switch is slid all the way up it will cause the interior lights to stay on. Hope this helps.

Dash and shifter lights in 1996 jeep cherokee wont light

Hello and welcome to FixYa . Locate the dial that controls the brightness of the dashboardlights. If the control is not immediately evident. Make sure the brightness control is turned on. If it is and the lights aren't working, the problem may be a bad fuse. Check the fuse that controls the dashboard lights Replace the fuse if necessary. If just one part of the instrument panel is not lighting up, then you have either a burned-out bulb or a wiring problem.
