How do I check if I'm getting spark in a2006 trailblazer

You visually check for spark at the spark plug. If coil on plug ignition, remove coil, use spark tester, ground spark tester. Engine cranking, visually see spark jump the gap on tester. The spark tester usually has alligator clip so you can ground it to engine block. It's probably best not to hold anything in your hand. I've been bit many times by secondary ignition voltage, not pleasant, but, it hasn't killed me, yet. I don't like it.
A digital multimeter may be sensitive enough for inductive reading? I haven't tried that with coil on plug ignition, yet. That is bleed through voltage/ inductive, you don't take anything loose and you don't penetrate anything, you just touch the coil. Some of the readings I've seen are around .5-- or .7 volt, not even a full volt. Granted that test may not be conclusive?

Battery Testing

Batteries can be measured with a volt meter, this usually gives a reading in volts such as 11.5 or 12.0. The voltage reading will not indicate battery condition.

All electrical requirements are established in amperes. Amperage of a battery can not be determined with a volt meter. The battery is a storage of amperage, however in order to measure this amperage it must be on the move, meaning operating something that requires power.

The only way to determine battery condition is by the use of a load tester. A load tester basically shorts the positive side of the battery to the negative side of the battery through a large resistor, this measures the amperage inside the battery, thus giving battery condition.

You can and will get readings, from a volt meter, anywhere from 10.5 to 12.0 volts on a bad battery. So if you suspect you have a bad battery, have it load tested to determine it true condition.

How do you check the alternator

Get a $5.00 tester in Harbor freight and tools
Scale in DC lower scale but grader than 12 volts
tester have a positive red and negative black cable
black to chassis and red on the thick cable of the alternator
should read greater that 13 volts, if less or equal 12, alternator is bad.
-Or remove and take it to a auto part for test

No spark when starting

COIL ON DISTRIBUTOR MAY BE SHORTED...

USE A 12 VOLT TESTER TO CHECK...PLACE RED WIRE FROM TESTER TO BATTERY...PLACE BLACK LEAD TO BLACK WIRE OF DISTRIBUTOR, CRANK ENGINE, IT SHOULD READ POSITIVE 12 VOLTS...IF NOT IT IS SHORTED... however this is not set in stone. DON'T USE A NINE VOLT TESTER...

USE A OHMMETER, CHECK THE RESISTANCE BETWEEN THE SIDE TERMINALS OF THE COIL, DISCONNECTED. YOU SHOULD SEE 0.75 TO 0.81 RESISTANCE. THEN CHECK THE RESISTANCE BETWEEN EITHER SIDE TERMINAL AND THE CENTER HIGH TENSION TERMINAL. THE READING SHOULD BE 10,000 TO 11,000 OHMS. ANY SIGNIFICANT DEVIATION FROM THESE NUMBERS WOULD INDICATE THE COIL COULD BE DEFECTIVE.

How do you know if alternator is bad in a 1998 aurora

If you have a voltage tester check the voltage of the battery after you charge it. it should be 12 volts with the car off. then start the car it should read about 14 to 14.5 volts if the alternator is working. If the voltage stays at 12 its not charging and if it only jumps up a little its not charging enough to charge the battery

Hard to turn over like weak battery?????

Clean battery terminals. Then buy a cheap tester that plugs into cig lighter about 5 dollars The battery should be about 12.6 volts just sitting. Start car and meter should read 13.8 or above if not replace alternator if it reads good and the battery is charged up turn off car turn on headlight for 2 seconds turn off and read meter it should read 12.6 if not replace battery or have it tested for free at autoparts store. If they load test battery and say it is good and the charging system shows good then your starter is drawing to much power remove starter have it tested for free at auto parts store. If they say you need a rebuilt have them test it before you take it home

Dosnt keep a charge

Its ether the battery or the alternator. The best way to check it is with a load tester. To check it hook the tester to your battery with your car running, red to positive (+) black to negative (-) if the alt. Is good it should read around 13.6 volts to check your battery shut off your car and toggle the load test switch hold for a 10caribbean count the meter on the tester will tell you if its good. If you don't have one or can't get one most parts stores. Will do it for free. If both check out good you have a dead short somewhere. In that case you just have to track it down. But start with battery or alt.

Battery keeps running down on 96 cadillac elderado

if battery keeps running down. check the voltage across the batery posts while car is off.should be around 12.5 to13 volts. then with tester hooked up to battery, start the car. if alternator is ok, it while read about 14 volts give or take a few volts. if the gharging is low its a bad alternator or the drive belt.

While i was driving, the battery light came on, and now the car will not start, how do i change the battery

Odds are the problem is with the alternator rather than the battery however both are possible. Your local garage can test this for you, usually for free, if you can get the car there. But if you can't and have a set of booster cables and a DC voltage tester ( usually the small cheap ones are sufficient) then the following will work to let you know where the problem lies. Boost charge your battery from another vehicle ( positive to positive, negative to ground or follow the directions in your owners manual) until there's enough voltage in your battery to start your car. Make sure all your lights and accessories are shut off. With the engine on the problem car running disconnect the booster cables from both vehicles. Turn the tester on to DC volts on a range setting closest to but not less than 18 volts. Attach red lead to positive and black to negative on the questionable battery. Have an assistant rev the engine slightly. If the reading on the tester is below 12 volts then your alternator is not putting out enough voltage to charge your battery and it's your alternator that needs replacement. Of course this is assuming all of your main wires are snug and in good condition.
