I have a 97 silverado k1500 with the 5.7 vortec it will start and idle fine but when i get in and start driving and accelerate hard it pops and wont go past 3000 rpm

SOURCE: IT IDLES HIGH AN WONT REV UP

Change all the filters (fuel and air). check and see if all your spark plugs are firing or just change them. if it is fuel injected make sure your injectors are working. Hope something there helps get it running good.

Is the check engine light on? If so check what codes are stored. It sounds like the m a p sensor.

Fuel pressure specs for 97 Chevy Silverado 350 2 wheel drive


Base fuel pressure at idle for a MPFI engine is around 40-45 psi. It if were a vortec engine like the 4.3 V6 the pressure would be around 70psi.

I have a 1997 2 wheel drive Silverado 5.7 vortec, sputters on take off and after you get into overdrive, on hard accelerating pops in the exhaust, and last night while driving 60mph on a dark road I lost...


I take it you have no clue about automotive electrical testing ? Voltage drop testing electrical circuit's ? Do you know how to use a DVOM - digital volt ohm meter , how to read an use wiring diagrams ? Electrical distribution diagrams . Sounds like a loose connection , bad ground etc.... Electrical testing is the key to finding the problem . Not going on some web site an saying what the heck . Think someone's going to have a magical fix . Doesn't happen with automotive electrical problems . It takes years of training to learn electrical diagnostic's

Popping from intake is usually an indication of timing issue. Worst case issue, flat lobe on cam shaft but this is a constant. Check the timing first.

I have a 97 grand am gt with 3.1 idles fine but normal acceleration and cruise is nearly impossible. Bogs down at all speeds. Hard acceleration is fine goes good.


I had the same problem with my 89 grand am it was caused by a faulty crank position sensor. Initially it would cut out when accelerating and eventually wouldn't start at all, replaced the sensor runs great again.

Most likely the intake gaskets are bad. they will sag in the middle over time and allow a vacuum leak between the head and intake. recommend replacing the gaskets with the steel instead of plastic ones.

Hard to start chevy 350 vortec


You will need to do a fuel pump pressure leak-down test, the pump must not loose more than 5 PSI overnight, u will need a cheap fuel pressure test guage, the test port is on the fuel supply rail to the injectors on the intake manifold, it looks like a tire valve but metal with a plastic cap on it, u may be able to borrow this guage from Kragen, Autozone or a parts store like them, if not they are very cheap, less than $20 US. Run the engine with the test guage hooked up, turn off the engine and then check it in an hour or so, if it drops more than 5 PSI then u will need to replace the fuel pump in the gas tank. One note make sure the connection for the guage is tight with no leakage or the test is invalid
