2000 lasabre temperture gauge keeps going over to hot and back to normal . radiator is full and its not running hot

Check the cooling fan switch. It appears your auxiliary electric cooling fan isn't going on when at idle. and engine temp increases. While you are driving, air is being rammed thru your radiator as you cruise along, so it isn't overheating, at idle, that isn't happening, and the fan should go on as the temp goes up. When the ac is switched on, the fan is being signaled to operate due to the heavy ac load on the cooling system.

Look for a loose connection to the temperature sender unit on the motor.
If all connections OK, you may need a new temp sender unit.

When the car is completely cool,check the electric fan(s) for smooth rotation.

Clean/check/change the thermo sensor,contact and wire.

Excavate air pocket in coolant system / check for head gasket leak

This test will kill two birds with one stone.

===

MAKE SURE THE COOLANT SYSTEM and ENGINE IS COLD!

RAN THIS TEST IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA ONLY!

You will spill some coolant during this air pocket purge test.......BE KIND TO THE ENVIRONMENT and ANIMAL please clean up after the test!

Put the front end on a pair of ramp or park your car on a VERY STEEP HILL (radiator facing top of the hill) .

Top of the coolant reserve tank

Let it ran for 10-15 minutes.

Monitor for air pockets escaping from coolant reserve tank.

Small amount of bubbles is OK at 1-5 minute mark

After the thermostat open up (after 195 F warm up) at
5-12 minute mark or after high idle you should see less bubbles.

If you do not see any in rush of bubbles then your thermostat may be partially stuck or rusted badly inside the thermostat hosing.

Give the thermostat host few gentle taps.

If you see larger bubbles surfacing after 15 minutes then should do a hydrocarbon (HC) dye test to test for potential head gasket leak.

Let engine cold down and top off coolant reserve tank.

Start monitor for coolant lost

A coolant flush is require every 2 years or 24,000 miles.

I recommend the thermostat that has a relief pop-let to reduce the change of burst radiator and coolant hoses.

Make sure you get a new thermostat gasket,black RTV and fresh coolant for the job.

Tempurture gauge goes from normal to hot then back to normal replace thermostat already and still doing the same thing


-You could have an air pocket trapped in the engine. Look for an air bleed valve on or around the thermostat housing. Crack it open with engine running until only coolant, no air, is expelled. If none, take off the radiator cap (not while engine is hot, though) and run the engine until the thermostat opens and hot coolant begins circulating through the radiator. Shut off engine and put the cap back on. That should expel any air that was trapped. If it continues going hot and normal on the gauge, try replacing the temp sender unit. Also make sure coolant system is full, that includes the overflow tank.

Are you sure the radiator is full of coolant and has no air pockets ?
Have you replaced the thermostat ?

How do i put water in my radiator?


you need to replace thermostat and radiator cap.look under hood around engine compartment.look for a radiator cap near radiator,add 50/50 antifreeze and water to coolant system to bring up boiling point.pure water will cause engine run hotter because water evaporate away,remove radiator pour coolant in the radiator until coolant stop dropping in the radiator now some vechicle pour coolant in the coolant overflow jug,pour coolant until coolant level stop dropping and the coolant level stay at cold full mark.start engie let idle few minutes, watch coolant level in radiator if coolant start dropping add more coolant, when coolant level stop dropping put radiator cap back on let engine idle until both top radaitor hose and bottom coolant hose get warm turn off engine wait until it get cool then take a large rag slightly open radiator just a litle at a time to keep from getting scaled.once radiator remove add more coolant if low,put radiator cap back on start the engine let it idle watch the temp gauge if temperature gauge going hot zone stop engine wait until cool then add more coolant,keep doing this until engine stop overheating going into hot zone and coolant level stop dropping,make the coolant overflow jug coolant level stay at full cold mark, dont let jug run empty if so air will get in the coolant system causing engine to overheat.

Driving down the road the temperture gauge pegs out hot and the engine starts to run rough and finally cuts off. Pull the battery cable to reset the electricals and everything is back to normal.


likely the coolant temp sensor. Some of those newish fords have a engine protection system that shuts down cylinders, then full shutdown if the computer gets a signal that the engine is getting hot.

It's either a loose wire on the sending unit, or the sender itself. Or i suppose it could even be the gauge, but i'd bet on the one of the other 2.

Temperture gauge show's hot after a one minutes running


Most likely the heat sensor.
Ensure you replace the gauge sensor with the correct type to suit your gauge.
(dont confused it with the overtemp alarm switch sensor).
Check you've got the right sensor by shorting it out to frame/ground and observing the gauge movement.

First of all, it doesn't sound like your thermostat is working correctly to keep good hot/warm air coming , so I would change that, or have it changed for better heating inside. If you lift the hood & look in front of your radiator, On the engine side, you'll see a fan attached to, or in front of the radiator. It won't come on until the coolant temperature gauge gets up to proper operating temperature. Without getting in to too much detail, have your thermostat changed, and my guess is everything else will start working as it should, and whoever does the work, should know enough to check the fan operation when they do the thermostat.
