Hi, i have a Westwood S1300M i have snapped my left hand stub axel assy (accident with an immovable object) and have been told the part is now no longer available. Can anyone help regards Steve

Do you have to remove the snap ring on 1994 saturn sl 2 to get axel out


The left axle is a little tricky I use a crow bar and tuck the curved end in behind the cup of the axle then look for a good sturdy position on the transmission and do a quick snap on the crowbar and the axle pops out. Be ready with an oil pan if you did not drain the transmission oil as it will come out. Also Saturn transmissions get serviced with dexron III even the manual transmissions. When reinstalling the new axle place the transmission end in first and get the snap ring to hold before re-assembling the rest of it. Is best to insert the end of the axle into the transmission, then hold the axle straight while pushing inward on the axle until you feel the cv joint bottom out inside the cup then with a dead blow hammer, strike the outer end of the cv joint and you should be able to feel the inner snap into place. To make sure that it is reach in and grab the inner axle you should not be able to pull it back out by hand. If you try to hammer on the inner cv joint during installation you take the chance of damaging the boot. And causing premature failure of the inner axle cv joint. Hope this helps.

You should be able to hammer out the wheel studs
if you have clearance
You shouldn't have to pull the entire bearing assy

Look on YOU TUBE there are all kinds
of videos of hub replacements

You remove the axle nut & 3 or 4 bolts
holding the bearing assy,that is all
The axle stays in place
There is no puller involved

The rubber cover on the left side axel is tore. I need to replace the joint I think. How do I do this?


You will need to remove the front wheel. Unbolt the caliper and move aside. Remove the rotor. Remove the axle nut. Unbolt the 3 hub/ bearing bolts and remove hub assembly. Pull the axle shaft out through the opening left by the hub bearing. Cut off the old boot and clamps. Hold axle shaft and tap joint and axle stub off of shaft with a hammer. Install new boot on shaft and reverse steps for assembly.

CHANGING HEAD LIGHT


After opening the hood, look at the top of the headlight assy. You will see to short metal rods, one on eace side if the light. You just unclip the rods and lift them out. The headlight assy will pull forward, change the bulb (dont touch the bulb with your hands-use gloves) slide the assy back in till the holes line up. Reinstall the rods and snap them back in. Its about a 15 minute job.

Front axle removal


remove the axle stub retaining nut, disconnect the lower ball joint, disconnect the tie rod end, pull the spindle out and away from the axle stub tapping on the end of the stub if necessary with a hammer (just be careful) to pull the bearing hub loose from the axle stub. after separating the outside slide under vehicle (make sure the car is on jack stands and the rear wheels are blocked from rolling and very secure before crawling under any vehicle) look at where the inside axle stub goes into the transmission. you'll need a good sized pry bar to pop the axle out of the transmission. work the pry bar in between the inside axle stub and a good thick part of the transmission and pry the axle away from the trans., there is a snap ring on the inside axle stub that internally retains the axle you have to pry hard enough to compress the snap ring into the axle groove which will release the axle for removal. it's not a bad idea to replace the axle seal in the transmission while you're there but if it's not leaking and you don't damage it in the removal of the axle it's not necessary. measure and compare the new axle to the old one, it may have some differences in the shaft like missing vibration dampeners but if it's the same length and both axle stubs match the old ones in size and number of teeth you should be good. when you install the new axle line it up by hand and slide it in as far as possible manually then tap it in with a wooden or rubber mallet. if you don't have a mallet use a scrap of wood to protect the new axle stub threads and tap it in with a hammer. after you feel the snap ring collapse and the axle slide in tap on it gently to make sure it's fully seated then grab the inner axle stub and tug on it to insure the snap ring is in place. then reassemble in reverse order of removal making sure all nuts and bolts are tightened properly and all retainers are in place. good luck

Just in an accident, how much is an axel


You would need to get in touch with your local recycling yard, as prices vary from place to place. buying new would be HELL to find, and expensive. it may not hurt to call a dealer.

Axel Change?


I had the same issue and had it fixed for free based on my warranty. I don't remember the name of the part, but it wasn't the axel. From what I was told, it was a common problem, but not common enough to issue a recall. I recommend talking to a few different Saturn retailers. Good luck.

the axel that goes in tramission at the end of the shaft there a snap ring try it of the snap ring hold the axel in the trasmission hit on the axel it will come out the trasmission maybe oil to will come out it normat the side that goes on the wheel side hit it with hammer put it back and recheck the trany oil level hope it FIXYA our post PLEASE DONT forget to rate this pierre

Head to a hardware store or a Car parts store and get yourself a set of "Easy-Outs".

The idea is that you drill out the bolt with a bit about half the daimeter of the bolt. Insert the easy-out into this hole. Now the easy-out has a very loose backwards thread that bites into this hole you drilled. And turn itall in the out direction. The stub of the bolt left may still need wd-40, hitting with a hammer , heating, or what ever to loosen it slightly. - Neil
