I have a 2003 Buick rendezvous won't start turn over plus it gets hot

If it cranks good but won't start, have a helper crank it while you visually check for spark at the spark plugs. If spark everywhere, use a gage and check proper fuel pressure, also, check fuel injector pulse, engine cranking.

As far as overheating, it could almost anything, thermostat--water pump--radiator--radiator fan-- combustion gases in the coolant--cts. Can you check for applicable trouble codes? Some of the national brand autostores will check codes for free, if there are any.

What causes a backfire

Gases in the engine exploding at the wrong time, Ignition timing set wrong, misfire putting un-burnt fuel into the exhaust system, then ignited by hot gases. Most common fault, is an ignition cross fire, where a spark plug is fired at the wrong time, happened mostly with high tension plug leads breaking down in damp conditions and shorting across each other, causing the plug to ignite gases in the cylinder at the wrong time when a engine valve is open.

Incorrect valve clearances

Raw petrol means no combustion in the cylinders or fuel is flooded. Check the spark plugs and ignition spark first. Noise in the cylinder head could mean engine knocking due to oversupply of fuel or unburnt fuel causing higher pressure in cylinder.

Still trouble with my 2001 Ford Windstar after replacing spark plugs and wires. It always starts instantly though still running a little rough. Sometimes the power doesn't kick right in to climb

I would suggest you run a compression check on this engine and also have the coolant recovery tank tested for the presence of combustion gases with a gas analyzer, any gases would indicate a leaking head gasket. Any engine cylinder that is lower than 5% of the highest reading cylinder in pounds per square inch has a problem like a scored cylinder or leaking intake or exhaust valve seat.

2004 sonata will not start

Filling up the gas tank can stir up the fuel fumes. You may need to check your evap system? I can't rule out bad gas?
When the problem is ongoing, have a helper crank it while you check for spark at the plugs. If spark everywhere, use a gage and check proper fuel pressure and fuel injector pulse. With intermittent issues, need to test when problem is ongoing. How long since a tune-up? Any applicable trouble codes?
Problems at higher rpms, the basics, you check for a blockage of some kind, fuel--air--exhaust.

Can a bad distributer affect emissions ?

yes. The spark plug(s) may not get the full amount of spark created by the ignition coil, this would cause a week spark and incomplete combustion. These excess gases would show up as higher emissions readings.

Coolant smell in the exhaust. no "clean" spark plugs. coolant pressurizes and has exhaust gases in it. no oil in the water or water in the oil. runs great for about 20 miles then its low enough on coolant...

North star? Sounds like head gasket leak, but the key is the exhaust in coolant. There is a test for this...expensive to repair. More than just a gasket.

Causes of a cylinder going bad

Check the HT lead to the plug. Check the spark plug condition and look at the colour around the spark gap. . Does the plug look fouled with oil (worn rings possibly) or conversely does it look as if it has been running lean (possibly a blocked injector). Have the cylinder pressure tested. Good pressures would also point to the injector in some way being at fault. Reduced pressure indicates either badly seating valves, worn rings or failed head gasket. Lack of any real pressure indicates a hole in the piston crown. Whilst the engine is running open the oil filler cap and look for rhythmic pumping of gases blowing out, these will be from the crank case as a result of combustion gases blowing past the piston rings. Most remedies at this point entail the head to be removed for internal inspection.
