Question about 1996 Chevrolet Tahoe

1 Answer

I have a 96 Tahoe. No forward gears but have reverse.

I have a 96 Tahoe. Something in the drive train popped loudly and now the vehicle will not pull in forward, all gears. I do have reverse. Do you think this is a forward sprag problem or something else? Trans is a 4L60E

2001 Tahoe 4wd isn't engaging in 1,2,or 3rd or drive. It only goes forward when the gear shift is on reverse and when it starts to move it makes a loud clunk noise and grinding.

Not sounding to good. Sounds like you wiped out the planetary gears. Depending on the damage, your looking at $2000 rebuild.

What are common problems that cause the tranny to shift harshly when engaging or shifting into rev. On a 95 one ton dually 2 wd automatic with a 454 big block

What most people see as a harsh transmission shift when transitioning from forward gears to reverse gear is really just the drive train taking up the slack in the connections. You need to realize that over time the universal joints in the drive shaft, as well as the pinion and ring gears in the rear differential will experience wear. When you are going forward the drive shaft is turning one direction, the u-joints and differential gears are all taking stress one one particular side. When you shift to reverse, everything reverses. So, the first thing to happen is the front u-joint changes direction. There will be a small amount of slack in the joint from wear. This slack will cause an irregular motion while it is taken up. This irregular motion is propagated to the rear u-joint, which must do the same. It will induce additional irregular motion, which is passed to the pinion and ring gears in the rear differential. In a new car/truck, you won't hardly notice this since all the wear surfaces are new and at factory tolerances. Give the vehicle 60-100K miles or more of hard wear and the result of this shifting to reverse can be a relatively loud clunking noise that can shake the vehicle. Replacement of u-joints can alleviate some of the issue, but the rear end wear can only be addressed with replacement. But as we say.....if it ain't really broke, why fix it?

WONT DRIVE FORWARDS OR REVERSE.

if there is fluid under the vehicle, then likely you have punctured the transmission pan cover. without fluid present, the transmission will just slip out of gear.

if no fluid has dripped out of the pan, then you may have significantly altered the alignment of the drive-train to the point that parts are not lining-up anymore.

Transmission made a loud pop then quit moving in drive. Truck still moves in reverse

An automatic transmission consists of a series of bands (gears) which is each gear within the transmission. You state that truck will move in reverse, but not in drive. The loud pop you heard was the forward gear band breaking. From this point you have two options...either have the transmission rebuilt or replaced.

the linkage could have come undone or transmission has seized up ? look under the hood and see if the belt did in fact break and is lodges in someway ! as well as ck the transmission fluid level and physically look under the truck at the drive train and transmission for any visible things that appear out of the ordinary
