Question about 1998 Ford Contour
My car wont start. when i turn the key to start it, it makes a clicking noise. there is power because the radio and lights still come on. what could be the problem?
Either solenoid or starter is done. Charge battery to make sure it's still up. Could have enough power for lights and such but not enough for starter. Bypass solenoid with jumper cables to see if starter kicks in, if it does change solenoid. Starter could be seizing up. Get under and hit it with a hammer on the back of housing a few times and try.

Does the battery have enough capacity to turn over the engine though? Even flat car batteries will still power the radio. The best way would be to jump start the car uing a set of jumper leads. If it starts you know it is the battery that needs replacing.
If it still wont turn over then it is most likely the solenoid in your starter motor. You can often tap the starter motor with a hammer and free the solenoid as a temporary fix. The starter motor is loacted at the back of the engine on the bell housing if rear wheel drive, or around the tranmission if a front wheel drive.

SOURCE: Car wont start?
May sound stupid, but use a voltmeter to double check your batteries' charge.
Just cause its new..stranger things have happened..
Check your battery connections? tight?
Check your grounds around the engine compartment frame.
Check starter ground for same problem.
Check the fuses and relays in the fuse box in the engine compartment.
Your main heavy duty components are fused there.
