Bottom falls out of idle after revving engine cold


Its probably a problem with the water temperature sensor. Also do not rev a cold engine. The engine has a "cold start sequence" which is similar to a choke. When the engine gives a cold signal, the fuel mix is made richer and the timing is changed until the engine warms.

Let the engine warm at the preset factory settings. Sometimes the O2 sensors will cancel the cold start sequence before the water is warm. Racing the engine will warm the O2 sensors too quickly.

As for the viscosity of oil to use, most new engines today require a multiviscosity 5W-30 oil for all-round driving. The lighter 5W-30 oils contain friction reducing additives that help improve fuel economy, and also allow the oil to quickly reach critical upper valvetrain components when a cold engine is first started. Most engine wear occurs immediately after a cold start, good- day!!

2003 alero, won't start in the morning, unless i spray quick start into the intake, then it will start,, there is fuel pressure and good spark, when i get it running,, it will start up all day long,,,, but...


Next time it happens, turn the key to the "on" position. See if you can hear the fuel pump engaging, sending fuel up to the motor. If not, you have a fuel pump issue. It doesn't seem often this happens, but when a vehicle is started, the fuel pump feeds gas to the engine. After the engine is started, it's more of a pressure thing, letting the fuel just flow. It may not be getting that extra push, when the pump is cold.

might be good to be the engine shown as available in this vehicle - but just for a point to initiate problems resolution for - 2.4L/3.7L/4.0L/4.7L - get an idle air replacement gasket for future use - once it is has been running or has obtained some warm up temp - disconnect your idle air control valve wiring - see what effect it has on the motor -this will effect cold engine air bypass and air/fuel enrichment for the cold engine - if it is not opening and closing properly it will not start or run/idle properly - it can/will also cause you check engine light or codes - Also in this system is an ambient air temperature sensor - telling the computer the air/motor is cold and needs to enrich-en the fuel mixture as an old fashioned choke would do - I have no idea of the condition of the overall tune up on the engine so other items may also influence or prevail - such as dirty throttle body and fuel pressure regulator / filter or egr system issues - tough to do without specs. details - codes or vehicle history This is a US based gasoline jeep ? if diesel look at glow plugs or glow plug relay

If it's only happening erratically (cold) your seem to be describing a faulty starter, or even ck the relay if avail. Starter, most probable.

sounds to me that there could be an engine temperature switch that is malfunctioning or not working at all. the temperature switch tells the engine that its cold and that the fuel injection system should operate in cold mode. the switch then tells the computer to start the engine in cold mode. if it malfunctions, the engine controlling unit confuses itself and then cuts off. this is an early sign of that unit failing until the car won't start at all. it's just wear and tear and time that does these things. a good mechanic should help you out quick and should be a couple of ours work. good luck

I read the other two solutions top your problem and I have to say, some people should not give advice, because the advice they are giving is not worth anything. NOW, let me tell you what is wrong with your car. You have a defective IAC (Idle Air Control) value. The IAC value (sometimes called a cold start value) is used as a means to quickly start your car when it is cold outside. Replace the IAC (easy to do) and your problem will be solved..
