Here's what I did, and I was very pleased...

I took my old sub out, tapped onto the wires and ran them down into the compartment that stores the 3rd row. In the compartment, I mounted a Bazooka 10" Tube (non-powered). It works great. I had also replaced my head unit w/ a new Alpine Deck, keeping the stock amp, but the sub worked fine w/ the stock deck and amp too. It hits pretty hard for what it is, much better than the factory sub.

There are step by step instructions on the web, but I cannot find the link. I'll try to update my post w/ them when I locate them.

Good luck.

Found this link as well with some more info:

Rear speaker rattles in 02 Montero Limited

That cover doesn't come off - It's screwed (4) from behind. You have to take the upper trim piece off (and handle) to remove the bottom trim piece and access the subwoofer. If your sub is like mine, the foam all the way around the sub has torn away, making it rattle. There are only 4 screws holding the sub in place, and it's sticky taped to the wall, so you may have to pry it off. Hope this helps!
