SOURCE: BROKEN FLEXPLATE ON TOYOTA 4RUNNER HAVE BROKEN 3

G'day mate , misallignment, make sure the bell housing is in good clean servicable condition also when the box is out check that the bell housing to gearbox is flat clean and serviceable by removing the torque converter and unbolting bell housing if it is posible also is the starter straight and in to the correct depth for mesh as if it is to shy or in to far it will put pressure on the flywheel as the torque converter has room to move in and out but the flywheel is under great pressure at that point and will not like being flexed bac to accomadate a deep starter, on the bell housing bolt holes there may be hollow dowels in the bolt holes make sure these are clean, in the right place and actually there, hope this helps

Best for you to buy a manual. There is a lot to do for this job and you need to be able to reference back to it. I do them in about 6 hours. But I have a lift, jacks and tools to do it. If I had to do it on the ground, it would be at least 4 hours longer. I applaud you for saving yourself $700 and doing it yourself. Spend the extra $30 and get the manual. Even I would just give the quick version, which leaves out a lot. Because we do this all the time. Really quick version is, remove the transmission and replace the plate.

Replaced starter in 2002 tundra, now the starter spins but does not engage

sounds like you need to shim out the starter so the bendex gear in the starter engages with the flywheel/flexplate. as long as the bendex gear in the starter comes out the casing and spins shimming it will take care of that problem

Grinding noise when trying to start 04 Taurus about once per 40-50 starts. had starter replaced and now grinding is worse. once per 10 starts. starts on third try.

It sounds like the gap between the starter gear and flexplate is growing. The ring gear may be worn out in spots causing the starter not to engage the (shortened) teeth of the flexplate. Or the starter is shimmed too far from the flywheel ( less likely ).

The flexplate problem will require the removal of the transmission to repair.

The part itself is not that expensive, however, the labor to replace will bite you

I believe by the way you describe it it does sound like STarter is freewheeling.....Automatics have a flexplate instead of a flywheel....Although it is a solid metal starter ring around a thin metal flexplate....More than likely the starter gear is spinning on the shaft rather than the FLEXPLATE or
FLYWHEEL if you prefer....I Have installed rebuilt starters that were new but didnt work ....

In the old days you had to shim starters to or away from the flywheel...IF YOU ARE OLD ENOUGH TO REMEMBER...I would disconnect battery and remove starter.....CHECK FLEXPLATE AND STARTER GEAR TEETH...It could be installed wrong...Some I have seen installed with the starter teeth pointed away from the FLEXPLATE by accident...But if it starts sometimes...It should definitely be the Starter teeth or FLEXPLATE teeth worn in different areas................

Starting problem, starter doesn't enguage. good starter, battery, celinoid, ignition lock, flex plate.

Have you chk. the starter switch on the steering colume under dash? Or is starter drive kicking in but not engaging teeth in flexplate? If its not engaging teeth on flexplate starter needs to be shimmed, or if its missing the teeth altogether on flexplate or bearly catching the teeth, top of starter nose wear it bolts up needs to be filed down to engage the teeth on flexplate.
