Using a timing light, watch the light on the timing mark and if it is all over the place and not steady on the mark then that indicates a worn shaft and bushes in the distributor
use carbon resistance plug leads that have thick insulation( (not el-cheapo leads ) modern plugs are designed to run carbon leads
run the fault codes as the problem may be in the air /fuel control sensors and not the distributor or crank. cam position sensors

Cant get 8n to run. starts but misses. new plugs, crb, distributor, coil, tank shut-off, ign switch, ceramic resister, ballast resister, fresh gas, but has power to ign switch whether on or off.

If it starts but misses meaning it runs but not on all cylinders?.....then,
Are the spark plug wires in the correct firing order?
Are the spark plug wires in good shape?
Is there compression on all cylinders?
If a valve is bad it won't fire smoothly.
If you pull the plugs are any black with carbon?
(a black carbon coated plug will not fire, especially with a 6 volt system)
Is the distributor car attached fully and correctly?
When the distributor cap is off,is there any side play in the distributor shaft?
Is the point gap correct on the points?
Start the tractor cold and feel the spark plugs, the one or two that are colder than the others are the missing cylinders,if two are cold you could try switching those spark plug wires with each other,in case they are mixed up,and if two are missing are side by side you could have a head gasket leak between cylinder problem.
TIP 1, the BEST THING to do on a Ford 8N is to convert it to 12 volts neg ground.Add a alternator,(76 chev pickup alt fits good) leave the starter as it is (it does care if it's positive or neg ground or 12v) and add a 72 dodge ignition resistor in line to a 12 volt coil.(unless your new 12v coil does not need a resistor)
This set up will increase your fuel economy, add power and start instantly in any temp.
TIP 2,you can use unleaded fuel in a Ford 8n as it already has hardened valve seats.
BUT 10% Ethanol fuel is BAD,it can be used, but shut off the fuel at the tank and let the tractor carb run dry before shutting it off if you are not going to use the tractor with in a few days.

2.5L. Why no spark cylinders 1 and 2?

You probably have carbon core spark plug leads, and they can break down over time. They are used to help reduce radio and television interference. Replace them with copper core leads and new spark plug caps. Whilst I was at it, I would change the spark plugs so everything is new.

You can also remove the distributor cap and look for grey track marks? If you have those, you are losing the spark there, so replace the cap.

I have 2002 Durango with 360CID engine. #8 cylinder does not fire.

Had a similar problem years ago. Since everything is electronic very hard to do self diagnostic. Make sure the boot is completely into the "Rotor" cap. Are these original wires? Not sure if some still use graphite or all copper these days. Worst case is carbon build up on # 8 piston. compression test is 1st thing. Was plug anode clean or pitted? May not be a whole bunch of help but ck these things out 1st. Best advise is think simple before you freak out.

No spark to engine 1991 ford pickup

It can be faulty or dirty spark plug itselfd. Also for reference get the fuel level checked. Is the fuel tank is empty or near to empty.
Try cleaning the spark plugs and then see if that is helpin. On some cases the black carbon layer gets collected on the spark plugs and that causes the problem,so cleaning the plugs help. But if its not helping, then spark plug has to be replaced.Spark plugs get power from ignition coil to ignite sparks. If ignitioncoils are faulty then also there will no spark.--------------

1998 chevy blazer - replaced the distributor cap 4x because of loss of power/misfire when accelerating. Post for plug #6 at cap is always discolored when truck runs bad - replacing cap corrects the problem...

It sounds like you have the old carbon filled spark plug wires on your blazer instead of the wire ones. If I am right, then the #6 plug wire needs replaced. If not that, then go to the better spark plugs when you change them AND make sure you take a good look at the #6 plug closely to find out if you are getting either a carbon build up (which the better hotter plugs would correct) or if it is oily which might mean #6 cylinder is going to need a ring job.
Hope this helps

Engin developes diesel knock followed by the engin management light comes on

Assuming the engine timing is'nt the problem; you may have a fouled spark plug, bad spark plug wire, or excessive carbon build-up on the valves and pistons etc. Make sure all fluid levels are where they should be. Try replacing the spark plugs and wires. Look in your operator's manual in the specs sections and make sure the spark plugs that are installed are gapped properly. Improperly gapped spark plugs or split-fire ( can't be gapped) spark plugs are known to cause engine issues. Make sure to use dielectric grease when connecting the spark plug boots to the spark plugs; and the wires to the distributor. Also run a couple bottles of fuel system or injector cleaner and water remover through several tanks of gas to remove any possible excessive carbon build-up. Hope this helps. God bless!
