The clunking noise is now a grinding noise in the front driver side. I am told that it is a part attached to the steering box component.

Get it to a reputable suspension shop to have it checked out,if it was said a part on the steering then you don't want to risk losing steering when the worn parts break.Speculating it could be tie rods, sway bar links, ball joints, bushings etc etc everything that moves when you hit the bumps.

HOW DO i HIT THE STARTER WITH A HAMMER

Hi Barb, I'm glad to help! Barb you have a RANGE SWITCH which is located on top of the transmission and the shifter cable connects to it. Your other question on how to hit the starter with a hammer. Just so you know its best for someone to hold the key in the start position while you hit the starter. If you can't reach the starter to hit it with a hammer then use a long object to reach the starter and hit that object it will have the same affect. Hope this helps and have an awesome day Barb.

How to put lower baljoint back into lower leg

lower ball joints are fitted from the bottom up and are either bolted back in place or are pressed in place . I have done this pressing bit by fitting the ball joint in place and doing everything up and then placing a jack under the ball joint and raising the car so that the weight is on the suspension and ball and then I use a heavy hammer and hit the arm down which generally drives the ball joint into place.. Remember that the weight of the vehicle makes the suspension arm press down on the ball joint so it and tries to pull it up through the arm

Control arm removal

Take the wheel off, secure strut to lower frame with a strong piece of rope, place a jack under the sway bar, jack up slightly, that will hold the strut from lowering anymore via the link from the sway arm to the strut (reason for the rope securing the strut is it will swing out towards you when the lower control arm is removed), saturate all the bolts with a good penatrating oil [Liquid Wrench = Good Stuff] remove the nut from the lower ball joint stud, spray on more penatrating oil where stud goes through spindle, hit the spindle with a good size hammer where the ball joint stud goes through the spindle (always hit what it goes through), give it several hard sharp raps from the sides, then hit downward on the lower control arm with hammer, most of the time the stud will come right out, if not, put nut back on ball joint stud just until the stud is flush with the top of the nut, since you can not hit directly on the top of stud, get a good sized wrench to go across the stud and hit downward on either side of the wrench, holding other end with your other hand, if the ball joint does not come out now, hit the spindle from the sides some more HARD, then hit downward on control arm, if it still does not come loose you will have to get (or rent) a spreader (Pickle Fork) to separate the ball joint from the spindle, then remove the two bolts from the lower frame, slide lower control arm out.

My 2001 Pathfinder is starting to wobble when i hit a groove in the road or sometimes when i make a sudden move it gets really bad

Have a front end shop inspect the front end for worn parts in the steering like tie rod ends and suspension bushings or worn ball joints.

The left front wheel bearing on my 1995 3000 gt needs to be changed. how do i changed them, i was told i wuold need an extractor

If the bearing is pressed in you will have to take it to a shop to get them in, but you can remove the spindle and save yourself some money. Remove the tire, remove the bolts from the strut, tierod, cv shaft, and ball joint. To remove the ball joint and tierod from the spindle you will need a fairly large hammer. (Small 3lb Sledge works great). Hit the spindle were the tierod and ball joint go into it. Do not hit the threads of the two. Usually a couple of good hits will pop the tierod and ball joint out. Again make sure you hit the spindle, I can not stress this enough. When they are loose take it to a shop and have the bearings replaced. Buy your own as this will save you money also. Each side on the floor will take about two hours. Have fun

Need to replace ball joints

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/villagerquest/ Ball Joint Removal
  1. Remove the wheel and tire assembly. For additional information, refer to Section 204-04 .
  1. Remove the suspension lower arm ball joint cotter pin.
  1. Remove the suspension lower arm ball joint nut and separate it from the wheel knuckle.
May have to leave nut partially on and hit the nut hard with a hammer to knock the tapered stud down and out. May have to hit side of knuckle to help get it to drop. or rent a pickle fork to drive between the bal joint and knuckle.
  1. Remove the suspension lower arm ball joint to suspension lower arm nuts and remove the ball joint.

Replacing front ball joints

TROUBLE BY? REMOVING IT?? REMOVE AND COUNT EACH TURN AND ASSEMBLE BACK IN THE SAME COUNTED ORDER. TO REMOVE FROM THE SPINDLE HIT IT WITH A HAMMER ON THE SIDE WALL OF WHERE THE BOLTS INSERTS THRU. PRY IT WITH A PRIBAR AND HIT IT ON THE SIDE WALLS THAT WAY BETTER AND EASIER THEN THOSE FORK BALL JOINT REMOVERS.
DONT HIT THE ACTUAL BOLD TREATHS.

Replace a 1999 b2500 control arm , i dont know how to seperate from the pin end

They make a special tool to press the ball joint (pin) out of the back of the wheel hub. I use a prybar and hammer. Position the prybar under the frame in such a way that you can apply downward pressure on the control arm. The bolt should still be installed holding the control arm to the frame. While applying as much downward pressure as possible on the prybar, hit the ball joint housing on the wheel hub with the hammer sharply and repeatedly until the ball joint falls free. I know it sounds terrible to hit your truck with a hammer, but you are not going to hurt it.
