My 825 Belarus suddenly and violently overheated while farming. There seems to be engine compression in the radiator. What is the most common failure, cylinder liner, or head gasket?

Overheating could be due to a restriction in a cooling passage, a problem with the water pump, or a blown head gasket.
If you get way too much pressure in the cooling system, even before the engine is warm, try a cylinder compression test. It's probably a warped head or blown gasket (or both).
If the compression test seems fine, you should reverse flush the system to try dislodge any restrictions.

Car over heating


The most common cause is low coolant level, so check the radiator and overflow tank and fill as needed. If coolant is over 2 years old, it is a good idea to change the coolant and thermostat-start afresh.
Check the radiator cap. If it doesn't hold pressure of about 13-15 psi in the coolant system, the seal is bad and a new radiator cap is called for. The coolant system is a sealed system, so you should never have to add coolant, save for a small loss through evaporation in the overflow tank. If you are losing coolant, there must be a leak that needs found and repaired-a pressure test of the system should show up a leak.
When the engine is warmed up, the thermostat opens and coolant is circulated through the engine (pushed by the water pump on the front of the engine), into the upper radiator hose to the radiator, and down through the radiator where it is cooled, then back to engine and water pump through the lower radiator hose-a continuous circulation. If anything blocks this circulation (like a partially plugged radiator, or leaves, trash or debris on the outside of the radiator preventing good radiator cooling) then you could get engine overheating. You may want to have the coolant circulation checked, and/or have the radiator and engine flushed. Also possible that the water pump may not be promoting good flow-the impellers on the pump may be worn down to stubs-this can happen if regular maintenance is not observed.
Your radiator fans should also be checked that they work when called for.
The worst case would be a blown cylinder head gasket-another common cause of overheating, and the most expensive fix. A compression test could check for this condition- a cylinder or two with low compression indicates head gasket failure. Coolant can get mixed in with the oil, or it may wind up in the cylinders and get burned, putting out white smoke out the exhaust.
Overheating is bad on engines, get it checked right away.

check coolant level in the radiator at the cap. have a pressure test done on the coolant system to check for leaks . Have a compression test done to check for head gasket and cracks.. Have the radiator flow tested to check for blocked cores.

Hi.

Do a compression test and look for symptoms of head gasket problems. If the leak is internal, then the most common cause is a worn head gasket. Water (or coolant) leaks internally through the head gasket reaching the cylinders where it gets vaporized. Symptoms are coolant fluid level going down (with no external leaks), bad performance, loss of compression, overheating, white smoke from exhaust because of vaporized coolant, traces of fuel in coolant reservoir etc.

If there is no head gasket problem and there is no overheating, then the leak is external. Check pump, radiator and coolant lines.

Overheating can be caused by:
  • Cracked cylinder head or damaged head gasket: a common problem if the engine overheated and cold water was added. You can check by carefully removing the radiator cap while the engine is cold and not ruunig, start the engine and if the water in the radiator as seen in the radiator cap hole 'bubbles' violently or you see milky/oily floaters, then this is most likely the issue - water continuously blowing out of the exhaust, after the engine has warmed up of course, is also a sign.
  • Engine timing can also cause overheating: is the engine runnig smoothly
  • Lean fuel mixture can also cause overheating: does the engine detonate?

You got it... most likely the head gasket...

Other symptoms:
1. White smoke out the tailpipe and excessive water dripping out of it.
2. With radiator cap OFF and car running, there will be frequent bursts of steam and water (careful! it may be violent).
3. Oil dipstick will have a "milky" goo ... that's water mixed with oil.
4. Overheating can be alleviated in an emergency by running with a "loosened" radiator cap.

Check cylinder compression to confirm that two adjacent cylinders have low, and nearly the same pressure. That confirms blown head gasket.

Overheating and leaking coolant


Get yourself a pressure tester. Make sure everything is as dry as possible, use compressed air if available. Top off the radiator and hook up to tester. Pump up not to exceed the psi on the cap. Then listen carefully and look with a light. If it's mainly on top of the engine, keep an eye on the intake gasket area and any hoses. This is your best bet of finding the leak, because trying to find it with the engine running can cause burns and you can't hear it leaking.

hello your intake gasket is most likely leaking internally into your engine.pretty common problem.the plastic and silicon gaskets get weak over time.

95 Mazda Millenia runs very rough after overheating


Hi,
The compression test was a good test, but since you asked for ideas, I'd also check the following basic "naked eye" visuals:
1. Do you notice any white-ish smoke out the exhaust, especially after killing it then cranking back up?
2. With engine cold, take the radiator cap off and crank it. Does it act more violent than expected, like a geyser?
3. Loosen the oil pan drain screw to see if any water finds its way out from the bottom of the oil pan.
If so, to these tests... blown head gasket.
