Could be caused by stuck contacts inside the park lamp relay . The brake light problem could be caused by a faulty brake light switch . This switch is on top of the brake pedal . Check for B+ voltage with a voltmeter before replacing the switch .
The park lamp relay is in the relay box Relay Box

I have a 2000 ford escort zx2 and the shifter won't engage unless I use the override button. What is causing my shifter not to work?

There is a solenoid lock which works on the brake light circuit, if the brake lights are working it is possible the solenoid has packed up. Need to check it's operation.

My escort zx2 will not shift out of park and the brake lights do not come on

Sounds like the brakelight switch or Wiring is bad,Fords and Mercs.have a wire breakage problem. If you look at the wires that plug into the switch you will possibly see a broken one, check the B/L fuse and the reason the shift lock is stuck is it gets it power to operate from the B/L switch!I hope this helps you, dont forget to vote on the answer. thanks have a good day if you need more info just ask me.
