SOURCE: got a 1990 ford taurus

Unfortunately if it was a rebuilt alternator it may have one bad diode causing it to bleed amps and drain the battery. With rebuilds this happens a lot these days. Either have the diodes tested or demand a different alternator under warranty.

I have replaced the battery & alternator 3 times & it works for a while then the alternator goes bad agian

Very strange question...
The alternator is charging the battery.
They work together. Did you replace it yourself or by a car mechanic? Is the belt OK? How do you know the alternator is bad? I'm so sorry, but this is just not enough info, I'd be very happy to help you, but I'd need a bit more info.

I have to replace the alternator on 2004 Dodge Intrepid 2.7 ltr. Mechanic is telling me I need a 160 amp alternator and 3 car part stores and 2 other mechanic shops are telling me the 2.7 ltr engine...

Run your Vehicle VIN # at a dealers parts counter,
to get the as built answer

Then buy the alternator at the parts store or online,
or fix yours

If you go to Rock Auto- you will see that no alternators
for your car cost more than $160.00

There is only one listed at 160Amp for the other motor

Try a different shop & trust the parts stores

Start at the dealer & get the correct info, only

I have changed 5 alternator in one day which where no good...I checked my 175 mega fuse it is ok i check the 30 amp fuse which had a 10amp fuse changed it to a 30 amp fuse but made it worse.. also check...

Five bad alternators in a row borders on the incredulous. 2, 3 maybe, but 5 is a Guinness world record! I have to ask the 30 amp fuse made what worse? Is it not charging? Have you tested the battery? Maybe it has a dead cell, won't take a charge. Recheck battery connections and grounds. Test the battery or try a different good battery. What testing tools are you using?

Alternator replaced

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

The different engine applications that the Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable are equipped with utilize different types of alternators. The following is a list of vehicle applications. For 1986-90 vehicles:

The 3.0L and the 3.8L engines utilize a side terminal alternator.

The 2.5L and the 3.8L (with Police Package only) engines utilize an alternator with an integral rear mount regulator and an internal fan.

The 3.0L SHO engines utilize an alternator with an internal fan and regulator. For 1991-93 vehicles:

The 2.5L, 3.0L and 3.8L engines utilize an alternator with a rear mount regulator and an internal fan.

The 3.0L and 3.2L SHO engines utilize an alternator with an internal regulator and fan.For 1994-95 vehicles:

The 3.0L, 3.8L and 3.0L SHO engines utilize an alternator with a rear mount regulator and an internal fan.

The 3.2L SHO vehicles utilize an alternator with a internal regulator and fan.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Loosen the alternator pivot bolt, then remove the adjusting bolt.
3. Remove the alternator drive belt from the drive pulley.
4. Tag and disengage the wiring terminals from the back of the alternator. The stator and the field wiring are the push-on type of retainer. After depressing the lock tab, the connector should be pulled straight off of the terminal to prevent damage.
5. Remove the alternator pivot bolt, then remove the alternator from the engine.
6. Position the alternator on the engine.
7. Install the alternator pivot bolt and the adjusting bolt, but do NOT tighten the bolts until the drive belt it tensioned.
8. Engage the wiring terminals to the alternator, as tagged during removal.
9. Install the drive belt over the alternator drive pulley, then adjust the belt tension using Belt Tension Gauge 021-00019, or equivalent.

When adjusting belt tension, apply pressure on the front housing only.

10. Tighten the adjusting bolt to 30-45 ft. lbs. (41-61 Nm), then tighten the pivot bolt to 50-70 ft. lbs. (68-94 Nm).
11. Connect the negative battery cable.

Hope helps.

Is there a difference between a 1991 Toyota MR2 Turbo 2.0 when it comes to alternators? Specifically, automatic vs manual and output? Thanks

NO there is no difference for the alternators, You can get a aftermarket alternator with a higher amp out put, but you really just need to up grade your Battery with a deeper cycle battery. This will improve the life of your alternator. Good luck and hope this helps you get you decide what you like to do with replacing the alternator
