Have you ever replaced the spark plug wires and the distributor cap and rotor? If not then do that and pull a spark plug and see if the electrodes are worn out. I assume this is a very high mile vehicle due to the extreme age and it is a Ford.

Bad spark plugs symptoms

An ignition misfire feels like the car is stumbling. Get it up to about 55mph and ease into acceleration, if it stumbles you might want to get a tune-up. If it stumbles at idle and gets better with acceleration, you might be dealing with a fuel delivery misfire(clogged fuel injector or fuel filter)

The check engine light is blinking because a misfire has been detected by the computer take the car to autozone and have them scan the computer for trouble codes they do it for free this will determine what cylinder is misifiring, after you know the trouble code you can further diagnose what the problem is and fix it...

1987 Topaz, has trouble accelerating.

Most likely it is a transmission problem. Being that old the transmission needs work and possibly the clutch replaced or Throw-out bearing.

Car has trouble accelerating sometime. if you stop put in park without shutting off engine then back to drive it sometimes accelerate fine. what do i need to look for.

with a vehicle that old I would replace all of the easy maintenance parts on the vehicle. Plugs and wires. Fuel filter. Also you should check the coils. You can do so by removing a plug wire boot off of one coil at a time. Ther should be a steady strong spark. You may get a shock but it is only a little one.

Left over night-47 topaz will not turn over battery is good

Pull your plugs out and see if they smell like gas. If they do, put a new set of plugs in it, (if they don't, put them back in), hold the accelerator totally to the floor till the car starts, then back off the acc. Holding the acc to the floor cuts the fuel off to the injectors and it will help in starting the engine in cold weather.
