Changing water pump and timing belt. think belt jumped, crank and oilpump timing marks line up ,cam marks off. help should i set from scratch and best way!

In general, backfiring indicates the cam, crank and ignition are out of time or out of phase. The timing marks on the crank and cam just line up the timing of the cam and crank. The alignment of the spark with them has to be phased at the right time too. Check the manual for how to set the distributor timing after an engine repair

Timing belt setting


line up the marks on crank shaft gear arrow to arrow, the front cam gear the mark goes to the middle on the rear cam gear the mark goes one notch below front gear mark they line up when the tension is put on belt.

I have a 1998 Dodge Stratus ES and am having problems getting the timeing belt on. Can somebody please explain how we may put the belt back on without a bunch of trouble?


Make sure your timing marks are lined up and start putting your belt on the rear cam first that would be 1,3,5 cam. Then route it under the water pump and up around the front cam 2,4,6 cam being careful the rear cam don't jump off it's mark. Keep tension on the belt while routing it. Continue routing it over the idler pulley keeping tension on it route it down and around the crank sprocket. Now set your tension pulley and replace the tension pin. Once the belt is set hand crank the engine 2 to 3 complete cycles then recheck your marks. This is for a 2.5 engine. Good luck hope this helps.

When i change the timingbelt,How do i Time it?


Set your timing mark on outer cover to the flywheel timing mark on pulley(T mark), then take the covers off and look you will clearly see marks that line up on the cam pulley to block,crank gear to block, and water pump shaft to crank (separate belt replace both, and replace water pump in high mile cars. ) These marks will all line up when you rotate the motor to top dead center on the compression stroke..

Timing marks and aligning timing belt


the marks for th cams are on the tin stuff behind the gears study it for a bit and nyoull see them the mark for the crank pully is on the case onthe bottom of the crank pully just of to one side

I am replacing my timing belt and tensioners on my 1994 rodeo, when I removed the timing belt the right side cam sproket moved clock wise, I need to set the timing and do not have the steps the manuel does...


You were supposed to clamp the cams so they don't spin, not to worry, I think they will only go so far, your belt should have marks on it, If it doesn't take it back and get one with marks on it, you need these to line up with the marks on the cams and crank, if they don't line up, I'll give your engine 11 miles before that cams shatter. When all three are in line, you should be all set, pull the pin on the belt tensioner and let her rip, don't forget the water pump, you got in there, do it .

Changed the water pump on my 1997 passport & now the timing is off.


I assume you are talking about valve timing not igntion timing. If that is the case your water pump maybe run by the timing belt. If it is you would need to completely disassemble the timing cover and set the number one cylinder to TDC (top dead center) on the Compression stroke not the exhaust stroke. Once you do that line the timing marks up on cam gears with marks on the side of the head. Then install a new timing belt and tensioner. It is a good idea to always change the pump and belt together. I would suggest buying a manual for your specific vehicle for specific torque specs and exact locations of components and procedures.

Ware do i line the timing marks up with


if you have the six there are marks on the cams i belive they point at 10 and 2 facing each other and if you look through the holes in the cam gears there are marks that line up with the marks on the cam then there is a notch in the crank gear that lines up with a dimple in the block(oil pump)if you line cams up before removing belt you should be ok and a tip when you get the belt around the love pulley stick a piece of rubber hose under belt this will prevent the belt from spinning the crank as it is lodged between timing belt and lip on oil pump also prevents belt from jumping teeth so you can get slack to the proper side also the office style paperclips that fold over after clipped to papers these wprk well to hold the belt to the cams so when your fussing with the tensioner the cams wont move and jump time but spin the crank 2 revolutions before tottally reassembling but all your timing marks should line up again

Timing is off


just get a new timing belt the marks will be on it point the arrows toward the front of the truck and line the marks on the cams and crank with the lines on the belt there will be a dimple on the cams and crank those are the timing marks good luck

There's a circular stamp on the crankshaft gear teeth. If you drop your oilpan there's a corresponding mark on your oilpump.
