You may have just simply had an issue with the alternator. Sometimes these can become stuck or not put out enough power to re-charge the battery, and this is why your battery was going flat. However a bad earth, open circuit or other similar electronic fault could cause your battery to drain and go flat. In addition to this, if your battery was to develop sulphur crystals (white solid crystal like things appearing from inside the battery) then this can cause your problem.
Each and every way you look at this, the main thing here is that your battery was not providing enough power to your ignition system and was either totally chargeless or about "flat" at time of need. So changing the battery was sensible (no point staring at something as interesting / annoying as a flat battery)
Might also be a good idea to perform a routine service on components in order to prevent any further mishaps. So changing things like your oil, filters, HT/ LT leads and spark/ glow plugs will all be of benefit. Also might want to take a look at that alternator, and even possibly the ignition coil. While about all of this, a simple visual inspection of your drivebelt and timing belt/ cam belt will possibly prevent something fatal from happening to your engine (if a timing belt breaks while engine is in service, then you will find that you will be replacing costly components if the whole thing is not KAPUT).

With the engin not running and the key off, lift the hood and disconnect the positive lead on the battery. Then touch the lead back to positive terminal on the battery. If a spark is seen, there is something still on in the car. Could be the power mirror switch, seat heaters or even a car phone. Trial and error to find it.
