If you would like to try a more affordable possibility before assuming that there is something seriously wrong with your car, then you should check your vehicle's transmission fluid levels. This should be done while your vehicle is running and in park or neutral, and you should simply remove the dipstick, clean it with a clean rag, reinsert it and check the fill line on the dipstick. If you find that your transmission fluid is low, try topping it off - you might just find that your vehicle will reverse perfectly if you do.
