If there is no r-12 or freon in the system it wont come on. Try jumping the pressure switch. It's a 2 wire plug somewhere one the AC lines. Just pull it off and jump the wire end with another wire.If the clutch engages you need freon or R-12.
Lazydave is correct. If you have leak and the R134a refrigerant falls below a certain level, the clutch will not engage. But I doubt you have a leak since you just bought the vehicle and the A/C was working good when you purchased it.
