SOURCE: 24 volt charging problems .2

A 12 volt battery is actually 13.2 volts fully charged. If you are reading 16 volts, you are probably getting extranious voltage from the system somewhere, especially if the vehicle is running when you check the voltage. The alternator will put out about 15-18 volts to charge the battery normally, and yours may put out 28-32 volts to charge them in series, but the batteries, when disconnected, should never read more than about 13.2 volts each. Typically, it will read about 12 1/2 volts when disconnected. COMPLETELY DISCONNECT BOTH OF THE BATTERIES. If you still read 16 volts when it is disconnected, you must have a bad meter because the battery can't produce that much voltage, no matter what. (Six 2.2 volt cells connected in series inside the case.) Put the meter on a known good battery on another car that is not running and see if you get the same reading. It sounds like the other battery is almost dead, regardless, and it sounds like your series/parallel switch may be malfunctioning. (That is the switch that puts the battery in series to run the 24 volt starter, then puts the batteries in parallel to run the remainder of the vehicle on 12 volts. This is all assuming that you have a diesel vehicle with a 24 volt starter and that is why you have two batteries.

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly (Electrician since late 1960's)

Ground goes to the - pole. Hooking it up backwards can damage your alternator, wiring harnesses and fuse links. (Fuse link damage is a nightmare to sort out!) What you do by hooking up a battery backwards is turn your vehicle wiring harness into a giant heating element. (<-Very bad!) If you just changed the battery and then you hooked up the cables with the smoking cable result you certainly did connect the cables backwards. The ground cable... will connect to chassis and in most cases the engine body / transmission somewhere.
The positive cable will eventually connect to the starter. Follow the ground lead from the battery to the chassis or engine body connection. (metal to metal contact) Once your sure that is the ground cable; connect it to the - post of the battery AFTER connecting the positive post terminal.
If you have a newer audio system you will have lost your radio codes. We can not provide the codes for anti-theft reasons. Activation Codes must be from the car dealer or audio system retailer.
Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

If I have lost acid from my battery should I have it replaced

If it was lost by evaporation it was just water that left, so add distilled water only. If it was lost by spillage then add a mix of 37-38% sulphuric acid with distilled water, to the correct level indicator.

You can get this mix from an autoparts store like Autozone. It can't be sent by post. If you make the mix yourself, then only ever add acid to water a bit at a time, NEVER add water to acid, it will spit. Wear good eye protection and rubber gloves as well.

In a 24 volt truck system can I use one calsium battery and one lead acid? They have the same amp/hour and CCA rating. What will happen or what can go wrong if I do?

Make sure the CHARGE rate on both batteries are the same. If not, then one will charge faster than the other and may heat up faster.

An unloaded reading of 10 Volts on a 12 Volt car battery is considered dead. There are 6 cells in a typical lead acid (car) battery - each provides 2 volts. They are internally connected in series to provide 12 volts on the + and - posts. If one is cell shorted out - you'd see 10 volts if fully charged. Trickle charge the battery for 24 hours and measure voltage again. If 12 volts, bring it to be load tested. that will tell you the true state of the battery.

The "service" light is on on back of the diehard battery attached to my craftsman garage door opener. How do I service it? Thanks.

It is a sealed lead acid or absorbed glass mat battery, they are unserviceable. I would try and make sure before replaceing that the leads that it is connected to are giving it a charge voltage of 12.6 volts or so, charging mechanize could have malfunctioned. It will also beep when no power is supplied to battery or unit itself, i.e. if power is out or a blown curcuit.

Battery drains while sitting

Hi Anonymous, perform the following tests:
1. Fill acid type batteries to proper levels.
2. Charge battery overnight at 1-2 amps you need 12.5 volts or better after charging.
3. Hook up battery positive cable, then with your multimeter on the milliamp scale connect one lead to the negative battery post and the other lead to the ground cable. Meter should read 3 milliamps or less, 10 milliamps with a radio, 15 milliamps with radio and CB. If your meter reads higher you need to isolate the circuit by pulling fuses and circuit breakers one at a time and observe meter for drop in aprerage then get out your test light and track down the short in that circuit.
3. Make sure all connections are clean and tight especially the negative cable at "BOTH" ends.
4. Hook up volt meter to battery and start engine, if meter falls below 9.5 v while cranking replace battery.
5. With engine running at 3600 RPM battery should read 14.3-14.7 volts if not continue tests.
6. Unplug voltage regulator from alternator at crankcase by front of primary cover.
7. To test voltage regulator go to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8EjV0IjW9Q
8. With ohm meter, one lead grounded, touch alternator pin meter should read infinity, if not replace stator.
9. With ohm meter, both leads touching alternator pins meter should read 0.1 to 0.2 ohms on 1989 and later models. 0.2 to 0.4 ohms 1988 and earlier models, if not replace stator.
10. With volt meter set on AC scale, both leads touching alternator pins meter should read
16 to 20 volts AC for every 1000 RPM'S 1989 and later and 19 to 26 volts AC for every 1000 RPMS. If not replace rotor.

Charging battery and I do not know, if it needs to be vented or is it a seal top?

Hi there,

If the battery looks like it has caps or covers on top (either screw on, or clip on) which can be removed, then:

1) remove all caps
2) check the internal battery acid (fluid) inside is just above the plates (if not, add just enough "pre-boiled" water - which has cooled - in each compartment to cover the plates).
3) get a damp rag and place over the battery openings (to prevent any flammable gases from escaping).
4) start charging battery

DANGER: never touch any acid from the battery

If no caps or covers are present, then it is a sealed unit - charge the battery as normal.

If there is crusty sulphur type powder present on the battery terminals or battery leads, boiling water will safely remove this residue.

There is steam and a strong egg smell coming from the battery. What is the problem?

This is a high charging on the battery, as it is overcharged . this can be failure of the alternator rectifier or the regulator.
so use a voltmeter and confirm the voltage range to rectify the fault.
A high charging of this nature can damage the battery in the long run.

sounds like either the battery has failed and/or the cables are badly corroded or loose sometimes when a battery sets that long the plates in the cells will sulfate can you try to jump it?
