Use the ball with a timing light , remove the vacuum advance tube rev the motor and note the advance ,( checks the mechanical advance )refit the vacuum hose and check advance , must be more than mechanical advance. ( checks both mechanical and vacuum advance are ok.

The lines are probably 5 degrees and 10 degrees btdc
place it on 10 btdc and se the distributor so that the point of the cam is facing the pick up exactly

if the timing mark is in the flywheel , the flywheel can only go one one way
the bolt holes are so drilled so that all of the holes have to be lined up exactly to allow the studs to go in all the way finger tight
your problem is in fitting the distributor into the hole correctly as that the adjustment is in the center of the slot
put the timing in the correct position, place the rotor button facing no 1 piston HT lead in the cap and insert the distributor body
you will see the rotor button move of the point so pull it back out and turn the button back forward or back so that when you put the distributor back in the button lines up
if you have no 1 on compression stroke , it will fire up at that point

Toyota landcruiser fj60 1984 4.2 petrol, I need to know what spec I have to set the timing with a timinglight....

A buddy had one of these (may have been a year or two older or newer), but if I remember correctly (I usually do), I think we set it at 7 degrees before TDC. Be sure and set your rotor in the cap of the distributor, pointing to your number one cylinder.

Hopefully this helps

Timing mark for toyota fj 62 3f petrol engine

Look on the back of the engine, on the same side as the plugs & distributer. There is a rubber cap on the fly wheel, and the timing marks are in there. Good luck!

Are you sure you didn't damage the distributor connector? check it carefully, lock into the distributor for any pin problems there, or better yet buy a rebuilt distributor, I am sure the issue is there.
