You have two possible areas to check - fuel or electrical systems.

Is fuel getting to the engine? It is possible you have a clogged fuel filter OR a dead fuel pump. To check it, disconnect the fuel line from the injector system at the engine, and have someone "bump" the starter to see if fuel comes out. If it does the pump is working but perhaps not with sufficient pressure to run the engine. Checking that requires special tools, a job for a pro.

Is there ignition spark from the sparkplugs? Try pulling one of the plugs out of the engine, and lay it on the engine block in direct contact with the metal and have someone try to start the engine. If you see a spark jump the gap on the plug, you have spark. If it does work, try each sparkplug, and if there is positive spark on all cylinders it is possible the ignition timing is bad or maladjusted. In this case unless you know what you are doing it is better to have a pro mechanic work on it.

It's hard to say, but the fact that it quit so suddenly makes me think it's the timing belt.

Car ten years old - Think the timing belt broke?

If it cranks very fast as if there is no compression it is definitely the belt! Check for spark? Fuel pump operation?

Caliber will start for a second then die. when i try to start again it will not crank. i have all lights and power in the car seems normal. ill let the car sit for a few hours and it starts fine.

Well if the vehicle starts even for a few seconds .That means you are getting fuel and electrictal supply to give you a spark through the coils wires and disturbuter at least start up .
Then you say you let it sit a few hr's and it starts again
Why did you have to put a new battery in it If it starts fine .
You have a problem with your fuel system not delivering enough fuel .
You can pretty much rule out the electrical system the battery turns the starting motor .
The vehicle it 08 not really old enough for a fuel pump to go but fuel filters clog and that will damage the pump aswell and cause a condution similiar to what you have described and while your at it take out the air filter that will help to .
Give this a try follow the fuel lines from the pump to the engine you will see a fuel filter change it .The vehicle will likely run again
For 10 to 20 dollars out of pocket

Have you fuel? Filter may be blocked or ignition coil breaking down?

BE DRIVING ALONG AND OUT OF NOWHERE SHE SHUTS DOWN AND WONT START WITHOUT STARTING FLUID AND SHUTS RIGHT BACK DOWN GIVE IT A HOUR OR TWO FIRES UP LIKE NOTHING EVER HAPPENED 99 S-10 BLAIZER 4.3

Take a fuel pressure gauge for a ride --tied to wipers

See if your loosing fuel pressure when it quites ,or see if
that data is avail on scan tool

Some brands of pumps don't last long,so I heard & see from
other experts on here

I guess a relay for fuel pump could have a bad primary coil in it

Try switching them around-- to something else you don't need
all the time

Driveing along and engine quit running. tried to start but would not. keep cranking and fuel came out of airfilter.

I hate to give bad news, I have forgotten when Chevy started putting Coil packs on that particular vehicle. If it has a Distributor pull the distributor cap and crank the motor over while you are watching the rotor assembly. If it doesn't turn the Timing Chain Broke. If it has a coil pack, pull one of the Valve Covers and crank the motor while watching the valves. If the valves don't cycle the the Timing chain is broken. Now, assuming the timing chain hasn't broken then you need to check the fuel pump.

I was driving down the road and my car just died going down the road and now it will crank over but wont start?

For the engine to run we need an ignition and fuel systems. If the ignition system has failed then no electrical arc is occuring at the spark plugs to cause the fuel air mixture to burn. You failed to mention the year and make of the failed car, so I can not speculate on possible failure. A quite possible failure is the lack of motor fuel being available to the propulsion engine. this can happen when the operator fails to provide motor fuel for the storage tank, or perhaps there was a leakage of motor fuel and the fuel was lost, along this same vein is the possibility of the motor fuel being nicked by theft. You might consider the motor fuel filter being blocked by filth and dirt preventing the free flow of motor fuel. Let us assume this vehicle has a fuel injected engine, then we have the failure of fuel injectors to deal with and also the ECM has perhaps failed. There are many things to be getting on with when an engine fails to start these examples a just a few of them

Dear dsmalley427,
I think it sounds like a fuel injection problem. You get fuel for a while until the injector backs up and then all of a sudden NO FUEL. The engine quits and the pressure drops and flow returns enough for you to restart. If I were you I would get to a good mechanic and check the fuel injectors.
OR--try adding a fuel additive that would clean the injectors.--Signed jwr

Quits while driving replaced many suspected parts

try this, the next time it quits leave the key in on position and get a broom stick and go to the passenger side of the car. About straight in at the back of the door ,reach under with the broom stick and tap the plastic gas tank a few times, have someone try to start it or go start it yourself. Mine did this even after the garage checked it out and cleaned the tank. Come to find out dirt settles around the fuel pump and clogs it. They just blame the pump but in my case the pump was fine. I was told Alero used a very small fine mesh in the sock that goes in the fuel pump and they clog up. But most of the dirt was around the plastic guard around the fuel pump. See if this works and let us know. Good luck

2000 GMC Sierra cranks wont start

Hello, 9-10 volts is not enough to keep a modern vehicle running. Taking in consideration the age and model of this truck, it could easily be an alternator failure.
I hope this helps.

Car want crank over

This is Caused by the Fuel Pump. If you remove the Fuel Pump relay and it will try to Crank, You have a Bad Fuel Pump. I do Believe that the Fuel Pump is located inside the Fuel Tank on the Sunfire. Not an easy Repair But, Necessary
