Assuming you are talking about a failed timing belt, it can cause damage to the valves if it happened at high speed, such as highway cruising speed or under hard acceleration. The camshaft will start decelerating in relation to the crankshaft and this results in the valves opening at a point where the piston is at the top of it's travel in the cylinder. The piston and crank have much more mass behind them and will continue to spin at higher rpms than the camshaft , so if your intake or exhaust valve gets in the way when the piston hits the top of stroke it can actually impact the valve head which can in turn bend the shaft of the valve. This can be checked when the timing set is replaced, if you have the right tools. This is not a job for the inexperienced.
