Question about 1996 Jeep Cherokee

3 Answers

1996 Jeep Cherokee will turn over but won't start.

I also have a 1996 jeep cherokee with an automatic and straight six cylinder motor. I have repalced the spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor, coil and fuel pump. The motor will turn over with no problem but won't start. The jeep ran fine for as long as I have owned it and now just won't start. There were no symptoms leading up to this. Did replacing the crank shaft sensor solve the problem on the other cherokee owner? Do you have a picture of the part?

Crank sensor is a chronic problem but you need to test it before replacing it. It is on the left side of the bellhousing at about 11 o'clock, even with the flywheel. (a real fun job to reach it)
Good luck!!

Sounds like a bad crank sensor, I don't have a photo but it bolts to the top left of the transmission just behind the valve cover on the drivers side. Its easy to install with no adjustments needed

Overheated. Why won't it start?

I'm not really familiar with JEEP mechanics but if you've replaced your water pump and it's still overheating with full water/coolant level, you should check the thermostat; when it fails, it's a common cause or overheating in all kind of cars

I'm attaching some links to Youtube tutorial about replacing thermostat in a Jeep but you can expand your Google search using terms

I just changed the plugs, wires, distributor cap on my 1996 jeep grand cherokee limited, the firing order is correct, but my engine is misfiring&the codes that come up on my computer/scanner reads misfire...

I would manually set it up to top dead center. (Rotate the engine by using a breaker bar and socket on the crankshaft pully bolt the same direction as it runs) with the front cylinder, #1, assuming you have a 4.0 liter straight six, spark plug out. Put your finger in the spark plug hole, and as the engine is turned by hand, you will feel "air pressure." This is coming up onto the compression stroke. With the piston at top, you are at top dead center. (Zero aligned for timing marks) Now remove the distributor cap, your rotor should be pointing at the stud for the number one plug wire.
Turning it will then move the rotor to the next plug to be fired.
