Not a good idea best to have it reground and fit new undersize bearings .

The timing belt can be inspected by removing the upper (front outer) timing cover.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the accessory drive belts.
  3. Remove the timing belt covers.
  4. Identify the timing belt running direction to avoid reversal during installation.
  5. Loosen timing belt tensioner bolt and remove timing belt.
  6. Remove the crankshaft sprocket flange.

To install:
  1. Rotate the crankshaft sprocket until timing mark on crankshaft sprocket is lined up with the oil pump timing mark at 1 o'clock position.
  2. Rotate the (inner) camshaft sprocket until mark on (inner) camshaft sprocket is lined up with the timing mark on alternator bracket.
  3. Rotate the (outer) camshaft sprocket (radiator side) until mark on the sprocket is lined up with the timing mark on the timing belt inner cover. Refer to timing belt illustration.
  4. Install the timing belt on the crankshaft sprocket while maintaining pressure on the tensioner side.
  5. Position the timing belt over the camshaft sprocket (radiator side). Next, position the belt under the water pump pulley, then over the (inner) sprocket and finally over the tensioner.
  6. Apply rotating force in the opposite direction to the camshaft sprocket (radiator side) to create tension on the timing belt tension side.
  7. Rotate the crankshaft in a clockwise direction and recheck engine timing marks.
  8. Install the crankshaft sprocket flange.
  9. Loosen the tensioner bolt and allow tensioner spring to tension the belt.
  10. Again rotate the crankshaft in a clockwise direction (2) full turns. Recheck the engine timing. Tighten the tensioner bolt to 23 ft. lbs. (31 Nm).
  11. Install the timing covers.
  12. Install the accessory drive belts.
  13. Connect battery negative cable.

Dual Mass Flywheel, and will also need new clutch Remove the engine coverUsing a [16 mm], rotate the tensioner arm clockwise (about 14° )and remove the belt from the pulley.
Remove the power steering pump pulley, idler pulley, tensioner pulley and crankshaft pulley.
Remove the upper and lower timing belt covers.

Remove the auto tensioner.
NOTE
Rotate the crankshaft clockwise and align the timing mark to set the No.1 cylinder's piston to TDC (compression stroke).
At this time, the timing marks of the camshaft sprocket and cylinder head cover should coincide with each other.




Unbolt the tensioner to remove the timing belt.
NOTE
If you plan to use the timing belt again, mark the rotation direction on the belt so you reinstall it correctly.

INSTALLATION
Install the idler pulley to water pump boss.
NOTE
Insert and install the idler pulley to the roll pin that is pressed in the water pump boss.


Install the tensioner arm and plain washer to the cylinder block.
Install the tensioner pulley to the tensioner arm.
Install the camshaft sprockets and align the timing marks.

NOTE
When installing the camshaft sprockets, fasten them tightly while holding the hexagonal part of the camshaft.
Before installing the timing belt, if the timing marks of the cam sprocket and the cylinder head cover do not coincide, do not rotate the cam sprocket more than 3 teeth in either direction.
Rotating the sprocket more than 3 teeth may allow the valve and piston to touch each other.
If the cam sprocket is rotated more than 3 teeth unavoidably, rotate the crankshaft counter - clock wise a bit before rotating the cam sprocket.
Install the auto tensioner to the front case.
NOTE
At this time auto tensioner's set pin should be compressed and secured with set pin.




Align the timing marks of each sprocket and install the timing belt in the following order. Crankshaft sprocket--> Idler pulley--> camshaft sprocket (LH side)--> Water pump pulley--> camshaft sprocket (RH side)--> Tensioner pulley.
NOTE
In this step, No. 1 cylinder is in the TDC (Compression stroke).
Be very careful if you use your fingers.



Pull out the set pin of the auto tensioner.



Install the upper and lower timing belt covers.
Install the power steering pump pulley, idler pulley, tensioner pulley and crankshaft pulley.
Using the wrench [16mm], rotate the tensioner arm clockwise (about 14°) and install the belt to the pulley.
Install the engine cover.
How to adjust the tension of the timing belt
Rotate the crankshaft 2 turns clockwise and measure the projected length of the auto tensioner at TDC (# 1 Compression stroke) after 5 minutes.
The projected length should be 6-8 mm.
Verify that the timing marks of each sprocket are in their specified position.
NOTE
If the timing marks are not in their specified position, repeat from 6 above.

Installation
1.Install No. 2 idler pulley (if removed). Install and tighten bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Ensure idler pulley is clean and rotates smoothly. 2.Install No. 1 idler pulley and tension spring (if removed). Pry No. 1 idler pulley away from timing belt area as far as possible. Temporarily tighten No. 1 idler pulley bolt. Ensure idler pulley is clean and rotates smoothly. 3.Using crankshaft pulley bolt, rotate crankshaft so timing mark on crankshaft sprocket aligns with timing mark on oil pump housing. See. This will position keyway in crankshaft sprocket at 12 o'clock position.

CAUTION:If reusing timing belt, ensure reference marks on timing belt align with reference marks placed on crankshaft and camshaft sprockets. Ensure timing belt is installed in original direction of rotation.
4.Ensure all sprockets and idler pulleys are clean. Install timing belt on crankshaft sprocket, oil pump sprocket, No. 1 idler pulley, and then No. 2 idler pulley in sequence. 5.Install timing belt guide with cupped side away from crankshaft sprocket and flat side toward timing belt. Install No. 1 timing belt cover and new gasket. 6.Align crankshaft pulley key groove with key in crankshaft. Install crankshaft pulley. Install and tighten crankshaft pulley bolt to specification. 7.Rotate crankshaft clockwise so cylinder No. 1 is at TDC on compression stroke. Ensure timing mark on crankshaft pulley aligns with "0" mark on No. 1 timing belt cover. If reusing timing belt, ensure reference mark on timing belt aligns with upper edge of No. 1 timing belt cover. 8.Rotate camshaft, and align hole in camshaft sprocket with alignment mark on camshaft bearing cap. See Fig. 2 . Install timing belt on camshaft sprocket. If reusing timing belt, ensure reference mark on timing belt aligns with the reference mark on camshaft sprocket. Ensure tension exists on timing belt between the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets.
CAUTION:DO NOT rotate crankshaft counterclockwise, as viewed from timing belt end of engine.
9.Loosen No. 1 idler pulley bolt 1/2 turn. Rotate crankshaft pulley 2 full revolutions clockwise from TDC to TDC. 10.Ensure timing mark on crankshaft pulley aligns with "0" mark on No. 1 timing belt cover, and hole in camshaft sprocket aligns with alignment mark on camshaft bearing cap. See Fig. 2 . If timing marks are not aligned, remove timing belt and reinstall. 11.Rotate crankshaft clockwise 1 and 7/8 revolutions and align crankshaft pulley "0" mark with 45-degree Before Top Dead Center (BTDC) mark on No. 1 timing belt cover. See Fig. 5 . 12.Tighten No. 1 idler pulley bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install No. 2 timing belt cover and gaskets. Install and tighten spark plugs to specification. 13.To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. Install all bolts/nuts on right (timing belt side) engine mount before tightening to specification. 14.On Camry, when installing control rod and bracket on strut tower and right (timing belt side engine mount, tighten bolts to specification in sequence.

Timing belt installation

1. Ensure locking bolts located correctly [4] & [5] in the picture below:

2. Ensure timing marks aligned [10].
3. Fit timing belt in clockwise direction, starting at crankshaft sprocket.

NOTE: "ISUZU" lettering on belt should be readable from front of engine.

4. Slacken tensioner pulley bolt [9]. Push tensioner pulley against belt.
5. Ensure belt is taut between injection pump sprocket and tensioner pulley as well as crankshaft sprocket and camshaft sprocket.
6. Position tensioner lever [8] against tensioner pulley housing.
7. Remove locking bolts from sprockets [4] & [5].
8. Apply a load of 10 ... 12 kg to tensioner lever. Use spring balance [11].
9. Tighten tensioner pulley bolt to 80 Nm.
10. Turn crankshaft slowly 45 degrees anti-clockwise. Use spring balance to tension belt.
11. Repeat tensioning procedure at 45 degrees intervals for one anti-clockwise turn of the crankshaft.

NOTE: DO NOT turn crankshaft clockwise during tensioning procedure!

12. Fit tensioner lever to original position. Tighten nuts [12].
13. Install: Injection Pump flange [6], Camshaft sprocket flange [7], and water pump pulley.
14. Install components in reverse order of removal & refill coolant.

DOHC Engine

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the timing chain front cover.
    NOTE: During timing chain and sprocket removal, position the
    crankshaft 90 degrees past Top Dead Center (TDC) to make sure the pistons will
    not contact the valves upon assembly.



  3. Carefully rotate the crankshaft clockwise so the timing mark on the
    crankshaft sprocket and keyway align with the main bearing cap split line.
  4. Remove the bolts, then remove the timing guides and tensioner.
  5. Remove the camshaft sprocket bolts, using a 7?8 in. (21mm) wrench
    to hold the camshaft. Then remove the timing chain and camshaft sprocket. Remove
    the crankshaft sprocket, if necessary.
    To install:

  6. Inspect the chain for wear and damage. Check the inside diameter of the
    chain, it should be no more than 23.15 in. (588mm). Inspect the chain guides for
    wear or cracks and the timing sprockets for teeth or key wear. Replace
    components as necessary.
  7. Verify that the crankshaft is positioned 90 degrees clockwise past TDC. The
    crankshaft keyway should be at 3 o'clock aligned with the main bearing cap split
    line to prevent piston and valve damage.
  8. Install the camshaft sprockets, retaining bolts and washers. Make sure the
    letters FRT on the sprockets face forward, away from the cylinder block. Use the
    wrench flats provided on the camshafts to hold the shaft and tighten the bolts
    to 75 ft. lbs. (102 Nm).
  9. Bring the camshafts up to No. 1 TDC by rotating the camshafts and sprocket
    until the dowel pins are at 12 o'clock. Install a 1?6 in. drill bit
    into the hole in the sprocket about 9 o'clock.
  10. If removed, install the crankshaft sprocket, then rotate the crankshaft
    counterclockwise 90 degree up to No. 1 TDC (keyway and sprocket timing mark at
    12 o'clock, in alignment with the block timing mark).
  11. Position the timing chain under the crankshaft sprocket and over the
    camshaft sprockets so 2 silver link plates align with the reference marks on the
    camshaft sprockets and another 2 plates align with the downward tooth (at 6
    o'clock position) on the crankshaft sprocket. Excess chain slack should be
    located on the tensioner side of the cylinder block.
  12. Verify that the crankshaft reference mark aligns with the cylinder block
    mark at 12 o'clock and that the timing pins are installed in the holes at about
    the 9 o'clock position. Remove the timing pins from the camshaft sprockets.
  13. Install the timing chain fixed guide to the right of the block face toward
    the water pump. Tighten the bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm) and verify the chain is
    snug against the guide.
  14. Install the pivoting chain guide and check for clearance between the block
    and head. Tighten the bolt to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm) and verify the guide pivots
    freely.
  15. Install the 2 forward camshaft bearing caps and the upper timing chain
    guide, then tighten the retaining bolts to 124 inch lbs. (14 Nm).
  16. Retract the tensioner plunger and pin the ratchet lever using a 1?8 in. (3.18mm) No.
    31 drill bit inserted in the alignment hole at the lower front of the component.
    Install the tensioner and tighten the bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm), then remove
    the drill bit.
  17. Make one final check to verify all components are properly timed, then
    remove all timing pins.
  18. Install the timing chain front cover.
  19. Connect the negative battery cable, start the engine and check for leaks.

1. Disconnect negative battery cable.

Replace timing belt


1993–96 2.3L and 2.6L Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Loosen and remove the engine accessory drive belts.
  3. Remove the cooling fan assembly and the water pump pulley.
  4. Drain the fluid from the power steering reservoir.
  5. Unbolt and remove the power steering pump. Unbolt the hydraulic line brackets from the upper timing cover and move the pump out of the work area without disconnecting the hydraulic lines.
  6. Disconnect and remove the starter motor if a flywheel holder (part No. J–38674) is to be used.
  7. Remove the upper timing belt cover.
  8. Rotate the crankshaft to set the engine at TDC/compression for the No. 1 cylinder. The arrow mark on camshaft sprocket aligns with mark on the rear timing cover.
  9. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  10. Remove the lower timing belt cover.
  11. Verify that the engine is set at TDC/compression for the No. 1 cylinder. The notch on the crankshaft sprocket aligns with the pointer on the oil seal retainer.
  12. Release and remove the tensioner spring to release the timing belt's tension.
  13. Remove the timing belt.
  14. Unbolt the tensioner pulley bracket from the engine's front cover.
  15. If necessary, unbolt and remove the camshaft sprockets. Use a puller to remove the crankshaft pulley if necessary. Don't loose the crankshaft sprocket key. To install:
  16. Install the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets if they were removed. Align the timing marks and be sure to install any keys. Tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
  17. Install the tensioner assembly. Tighten the tensioner mounting bolt to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm). Tighten the cap bolt to 9 ft. lbs. (13 Nm).
  18. Make sure the crankshaft and the camshaft sprockets are aligned with their timing marks. Install the timing belt onto the sprockets using the following sequence: first, crankshaft sprocket; second, oil pump sprocket; third, camshaft sprocket.
  19. Loosen the tensioner mounting bolt. This will allow the tensioner spring to apply pressure to the timing belt.
  20. After the spring has pulled the timing belt as far as possible, temporarily tighten the tensioner mounting bolt to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm). NOTE: Remove the flywheel holder before rotating the crankshaft. Reinstall the holder to torque the crankshaft pulley bolt.
  21. Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise two complete revolutions to check the rotation of the belt and the alignment of the timing marks. Listen for any rubbing noises which may mean the belt is binding.
  22. Loosen the tensioner pulley bolt to allow the spring to adjust the correct tension. Then, retighten the tensioner pulley bolt to 14 ft. lbs (19 Nm).
  23. Install the lower timing cover and the crankshaft pulley.
  24. Tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt to 87 ft. lbs. (118 Nm). Tighten the small pulley bolts to 6 ft. lbs. (8 Nm).
  25. Install the upper timing cover.
  26. Install the starter if it was removed. Tighten the bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  27. Install the power steering pump. If the hydraulic lines were disconnected, refill and bleed the power steering system.
  28. Install the water pump pulley and tighten its nut to 20 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
  29. Install the cooling fan assembly.
  30. Install and adjust the accessory drive belts.
  31. Connect the negative battery cable.

STEP 1 Remove Air Filter. STEP 2 Loosen the bolts securing the crankshaft pulley. Remove the load from the belt tensioner by turning the belt tensioner pulley locking bolt forward in the car using a 15 mm wrench. Remove the belt from the coolant pump pulley and slowly release the belt tensioner. STEP 3 Remove the belt tensioner and remove the steering pump pulley STEP 4 Remove the water pump pulley use the engine bracket to pry against. STEP 5 Remove the timing cover and Remove the right-hand front wheel and the cover in the wheel housing. STEP 6 Remove the crankshaft pulley (undo the six bolts but do not remove the centre bolt). STEP 7 Place the engine top dead center and Zero the engine. The markings on the camshaft sprockets and timing cover should be in alignment as also should the marking on the crankshaft. Use locking tools 83 95 006 and KM-800-2 for the camshaft sprockets and locking tool KM-800-10 for the crankshaft (These tools can be purchased from Saab (18774177222) or from Baum Tools). STEP 8 Before removing the toothed belt mark its direction of rotation . To facilitate refitting the belt can be marked at both the camshaft marking and the crankshaft marking. STE9cc7b85.jpgP 9
STEP 10 Fit the toothed belt according to the marked direction of rotation. Use setting tool 83 95 006 to keep the belt in place and adjust the tensioning roller loosely by hand to prevent the belt from jumping off. Adjust counterclockwise. Fit a section of the toothed belt and fit tool 83 93 985 to measure the belt tension. Loosely tighten the centre bolts of the adjusting rollers. Adjust the lower adjusting roller counter clockwise to a belt tension of 275-300 Nm. Turning torque 30 lb.ft ft ******The adjustment of the belt tension is for preparation ONLY and must not be used as a check when the belt adjusted for the final time! STEP 11 Turn the engine over two revolutions until just before the zero mark and place the locking tool on the crankshaft. Carefully turn the crankshaft in the direction of engine rotation until the arm rests against the coolant pump's flange and then tighten the arm. Fit setting tool 8395006 and check that the markings on the camshaft sprockets are aligned with the markings in the tool. ********Check that the A marking is approximately 2mm above B marking. If the distance is less readjustment is necessary. STEP 12 Fit the crankshaft pulley and Tighten to a torque of 15 foot lbs. STEP 13 Reinstall the inner wheel cover and front right wheel.
STEP 14 Reinstall Timing Cover.
STEP 15 Reinstall the water pump pulley use the engine bracket for leverage. STEP 16 Reinstall the power steering pulley and tighten to 6 foot lbs. STEP 17 Reinstall the belt tensioner and tighten to 30 foot lbs. STEP 18 Remove the belt tensioner load/pressure by turning the belt tensioner pulley locking bolt forwards in the car using a 15 mm wrench. Install the belt on the coolant pump pulley. Carefully release the belt tensioner. STEP 19 Reinstall the Air Cleaner and hoses that accompany Release the belt tension and remove the toothed belt.
