SOURCE: How to install a 2002 FORD EXPLORER 4.6L V8

Unless the timing chain suffered a catastrophic failure, ie broke into many pieces, you should not need to replace the cam and crank gears, the tensioner arm and tensioner. The timing chain and guide I can agree need to be replaced, but without a physical examination, you can't just say "replace all these parts". If you do let this mechanic do the work, insist on him giving you ALL the old parts. Then take them to another shop and ask their opinion. You may find the mechanic is honest, but I suspect not.

97 ford exporer timing issue

There are three engines used in a 97 model. The 4.0 single overhead cam V6 engine uses a timing chain in the front and in the rear, one for each cam. The left side is in the front and the right side is in the back. You would have to take the engine out to access the rear chain.
The 4.0 overhead valve engine and the V8 engine only have one chain in the front.

Could be a "Cam Phaser" problem. Look up this subject for your vehicle for extensive information.

If your engine is a dual cam engine, the timing mechanisms were problematic. Each side of the engine has 1 mechanism and they can be changed independently. Even a shortcut repair is expensive.

To sum it up, the shortcut method works quite well, but takes a special tool which may not be available for loan from the major autoparts stores.
Skill is involved in using this tool.

The Phasar is an automatic adjuster for each timing chain. It is possible that the chain did NOT jump, but that the Phaser stuck. Visual inspection is the only way to tell which side.

In general, if the engine makes noise like a diesel and the noise goes away above 2000rpm, it is a bad phaser.

My timing chain is bad

As timing chain accumulate mileage, chain stretch, sprockets wear out and set the valves off timing. Most chains go up to 100000 miles or more, but not always. As a rule when there is more than about half inch of play between the gears on a V6 or V8, it is the time for a new timing chain and sprockets.
It is unusual for a timing chain to accumulate 200000miles, but I remember a car, with broken timing chain with only 160000miles on it.
Signs of worn out timing chains are:
Rough idle.
Sluggish performance and poor economy.
Sudden engine performance change including the inability to start the engine.
Intermittent backfire through the intake manifold.
Inconsistent ignition timing or a clattering noise coming from the front of the engine.
It is a good idea to replace the water pump (coolant pump), and the thermostat while replacing the timing chain.
The cost of the replace of timing chain is at least +$1300, but if is to bad, we pull out engine and replace both guides. In this case might cost more.
Please do not be mad with me. I'm a certified dealer, and I'm trying to give you the necessary information to help you to deal with the problem.

Does the 2000 silverado v8 have a timing chain and if so at what milage should it be replaced

yes the silverado's have timing chains, just about all v6's and v8's have timing chains, and timing chains should not be serviced, unless you are having problems with a timing chain guide or timing chain tensioner
