*** motors are notorious for huge valve clearence
it is not likely that you toped your motor out
but there is an easy way to find out if it did
remove all plugs and slowely turn the motor over with your hands not the starter but your hands
if there is no tight spots it is likely you just need a timing belt if there is contact then you need the head rebuilt planed and new head gasket posibly need a new head depending on weather it cracked or not
have fun and happy testing and take your time

If it is a broken belt, you may have engine damage too.

I have a 03 mits endevour 3.8litre pwr steering belt broke had both belts replaced tried start the vhicle.cranks but won't start.

Check at the area of where the belt snapped what sensors and plugs and wiring could be affected. Most probably either a broken wire or broken or unplugged any connector.or any sensitive sensor has been damaged.

Timing belt broke while driving car what internal damage should i check for before trying to replace belt

I'd recommend doing a web (or dealer) search for your specific engine to see if it's an "interference" engine. An interference engine is one where the intake or exhaust valves could come in contact with the pistons if the timing belt were to break. If your engine is NOT an interference engine, you can start to swap out the timing belt with no worries. If it IS an interference engine, and the timing belt broke while you were driving, there could be a great deal of internal damage. It's hard to estimate what the damage could be... it could range from zero damage (unlikely), to broken valves and pistons. You could do a compression test on each cylinder before replacing the belt.

Good luck.

How much does a timing belt cost? and what could I expect to pay the mechanic on a 2002 Kia Rio Cino

The timing belt is not the big cost,if the belt has broken while you where driving the car the you may need to spend up to $3000 dollars to repair the damage caused by a broken belt.If your belt is not broke and you have over 50000 miles then get it replaced, expect to pay about $600-$900.This is dependant of labour rates and problems occurred during the repair, your price may be lower.
