Radiator, lean fuel mixture, wrong timing.. these are very general causes. Maybe if you gave us more information, including make and model, anything recently done that might be the cause..

You are describing the classic symptoms of a blown head gasket from the cylinder into the water jacket. This causes loss of compression in the affected cylinder and also injects hot gases into the cooling jacket resulting in overpressure and overheating of the coolant. Perform a compression check of all cylinders and if any are appreciably lower than the others, you are looking at some major engine work.

eeek, sounds like a possible head gasket failure. Check your coolant and oil. If the coolant is low top it off, and if the oil is milky, you are getting coolant in your oil which is usually a bad head gasket.

If it's overheating but not losing coolant,replace the thermostat.If it's overheating from loss of coolant,replace the radiator cap with one that is the proper pressure for that engine.Rigger says luck toya.

Loss of power after running for a while can be caused by anything from a partially clogged catalytic converter to engine overheating due to a faulty engine cooling system. Lots of other things can cause it as well.

WHEN IM DRIVING, IT POPS OR JERKS ALL OF A SUDDEN AND THEN WONT SHIFT GEARS. WHEN IM ON THE EXPRESSWAY AND IT DOES THIS, IT WILL BARELY GO 55 MPH.


Your transmission fluid is dangerously low (tranny is dry). The pops & jerks are the transmission
internal components trying not to seize onto each other due to lack of lubrication and/or overheating.
Low transmission fluid leads not only to loss of lubrication but lots of overheating (of the tranny).
The loss of Elantra performance (speed tops out at 55), is caused by power loss due to friction inside the transmission. All your power is lost overheating the transmission (toward destruction), instead of
being transmitted through the transmission to the wheels.

The 2004 Elantra takes Hyundai SP-III Automatic Transmission Fluid, with 8.4 quarts used in a
total refill - but just 5 quarts at a fluid change. For How-to transmission fluid change instructions:

check your catalytic converter, and check to see if you have oil in the water or visa versa

Power steering loss, overheating, dash board power


It sounds to me like the serpetine belt broke, DO NOT continue to drive it. The water pump (for engine cooling), the power steering pump, and the alternator (electrical system) are no longer operating. Have it towed to a shop or have someone put a new belt on it.

Sounds like the engine has siezed, possibly due to loss of coolant and then overheating.If so, this is major repairs. Did the temperature guage show overheating, did the engine oil light come on, is there any oil in the engine ? You need to take the car to a garage
