The first thing you need to do is have the AC system pressures checked to see if you are low on charge, it may have leaked out the front seal of the compressor, which is common cause of loss of charge.
Check that you have both sufficient voltage and AC system is properly charged. Also that your idle is set correctly. The idle should be higher when you turn on the AC. Does the idle increase / decrease when you turn on / off the AC? Low voltage from the alternator could cause the AC not to work properly but .... I would suspect you would notice that you have very dim headlights at idle if the alternator was not working correctly. The amount of charge in the AC system will definitely cause this type of problem.
I passed this question the first time I read it, so I will take a stab at it now. The fans don't come on until the compressor has pumped the freon pressure up to say 150 or 200 psi. And the compressor clutch has to have voltage to engage the clutch. I wonder if the clutch is going and needs 14 volts instead of 12 to engage ? Or the relay that powers the clutch ? Speeding up the engine would increase voltage from the alternator. This is assuming the serpentine belt is tight and everything else is working correctly. I think I would swap the relay with another and put a meter on that circuit to the ac clutch to see what it takes to engage it.
With the AC on, the fan will come on to help the ac codensor. Why your compressor keeps crapping out is definately something to look into. If your AC is overcharged the head pressures can get pretty high and if the oil is low, that would not help either.. Good Luck.
