Question about 1990 Toyota Celica

3 Answers

We have a 1990 Celica GTS hatchback w/ 5 FSE- 2.2 liter engine w/ 5 speed tranny. It also has A/C & antilock brakes. My wife was sitting in drive thru lane @ B. King & said she heard a pop & brake pedal went to the floor. She got home w. emergency brake & downshifting.(Good Girl) ----- Now the pedal is hard to push & pads feel like they're not putting enough pressure against the disks thus braking distance is not very good. ----- Took the master cylinder off & it is working fine.---- None of the wheel cylinders are leaking. Can't figure this one out?? Is there anyone out there that can help with this problem?

We took the master off - pushed in on rubber area & fluid squirted out quite a distance. The brake rod extends about 4 - 5" when you press on brake pedal & retracts normally.

Did not realize this car had a brake booster.

Any idea where it is located? What does it look like?

  • gnchrisman Jul 25, 2009

I answered all. Guess they didn't come thru. We removed the master cyl & pressed on rubber piston inside casting, brake fluid squirted out for approx. 3 - 4 ft. Also when we pressed on brake pedal the rod extended out approx 4 - 5 inches & retracted normally, I guess, it went bak to the position it started from.

Sounds like brake booster not working especially if you have a hard brake pedal while engine is going(no power assistance) pop could have been diaphram in booster which is what the brake master cylinder bolts to.
to check booster performance
with engine off pump brake pedal several times and then hold down pedal
now while holding brake pedal down start engine
if brake pedal starts to go down further booster good
if brake pedal doesnt go down and remains hard booster needs replacing.

How many liters of 80/90 weight gear oil does my 1990 chevy c1500 take in the transmission?

Fill at side fill hole until fluid begins to run back out. Let it run until it stops, install plug and wipe up excess. If fully drained, usually holds less than 3 liters.

1990 toyota celica gts 2200 motor vibration when idled up

You may want to check your motor mounts. If the mounts are broken or just too old they will cause the engine to have excessive vibration your notice also when shifting to drive or reverse it will feel like the vehicle jumps. replacing the mounts will help if they are damaged or may be that the vehicle needs a tune up.

Whats the max amount of miles you can drive on a 1990 toyota celica gts with the first engine?

If well maintained and with regular service this engine can last up to 150,000 miles. Remember, this means changing all fluids regularly, changing the hoses and belts regularly and just keeping the engine in tip top condition. No racing, no over revving, etc.

Slow to get up to speed, or rpm's up.

You probably have a broken retainer pin on the VVT (Variable Valve TIming) controller, which is located inside the cam area on the cylinder head. Not something that I would fool with if you have no experience removing the cams. Best left to a professional. Unfortunatly, quite a common problem, I have done 6 this year.
