Question about 1990 Toyota Celica
Sounds like brake booster not working especially if you have a hard brake pedal while engine is going(no power assistance) pop could have been diaphram in booster which is what the brake master cylinder bolts to.
to check booster performance
with engine off pump brake pedal several times and then hold down pedal
now while holding brake pedal down start engine
if brake pedal starts to go down further booster good
if brake pedal doesnt go down and remains hard booster needs replacing.
