Your radiator fan is not working. What year make model van is it? Look under the hood for a fuse/relay box.pop the cover off and flip it over, there should be a diagram of what fuse/relay does what.relays are cheap so just replace it.

Depending on the van Im going to assume it has an electric fan for the rad. When it reaches about 3/4 of the way to red hop out and see if the fan is on if its not its the fan, sensor or wiring. If it is its possible there is an issue with the thermostat but i doubt it as the temp lowers when moving at higher speeds. If its a mechanical fan on say a v8 then get it 3/4 hot and shut the engine off. Turn the fan blade and see if it has heavy resistance. If it spins free replace it.
Good luck

My 01 Pontiac Montana is trying to overheat at high power

If your vehicle doesn't actually overheat, just getting hot, I think that's the normal behaviour for these cars. My 03 AWD behaves the same way. When driving uphill, especialy when towing, the temperature rises close to the red marking, but I have never experienced it overheating. I think that the temperature has to rise much over the normal driving temperature to activate the two electric fans.

your electric fan for the AC is not working for whatever reason so when idles its all getting hot the engine and the AC system .This sort of work can be difficult to diagnose correctly and a code reader is about as good as a bible at mosque so seek the advice of a skilled mechanic who should be able to pin point the fault in seconds

You have a bad Radiator. It is clogged and needs to be flushed and cleaned. At normal driving speeds it is flowing just enough water to keep the car cool, but under heavy demand, like driving fast, the flow rate is inadequate to keep the temp down.

Fast idle astro van

Check the base plate gasket under the throttle body, some time the gasket start to leak, and will cause a high idle, if possible with engine running get some water and pore it at the base of the throttle bode, you will hear a suction sound, that's the gasket, replace it.

I have a 1999 jeep cherokee that has intermitant transmission problems 1)shifting up it wind out to 2k-3k before shifting 2) at higher speed it feels as if it slips out of overdrive rpm increase but speed...

It will shift out of overdrive upon increasing throttle , pulling hills and so on. Your overdrive probably kicks in around 35 to 45mph and kicks back out as you increase throttle. Electrically controled speed sensor to control the response. Overwise the engine would bog down to a stall. Over drive is just that. It changes the gearing ratio to over drive meaning less then final gear 4 to 1 down to 4 to 3 etc more direct drive ratio to lessen consumtion of fuel with less stress on engine. Have shift speed sensor adjusted. Don't drive in overdrive in city if most driving is under 45mph

Overheating

possibly the water pump is not moving the water fast enough at lower rpms when you down shift the rpms are faster and the pump might be pushing the antifreeze around better
