Question about 2001 Cadillac Sts

Why will my car randomly downshift while driving?

I will be driving along and all of a sudden my engine will rev up but there isn't much power. It is like it is downshifting while driving and then I can't get it to shift back up until I let off the gas and coast until the car slows down and I feel it kick back in. Then I will feel power again and it will go like normal. The transmission fluid is full. I also have to pump the gas a couple of times while starting the car and then hold down the gas to even get it to start. I don't know if this is related, but maybe it will help diagnose the problem. It's a 1993 Olds 98 regency. Any ideas would help as we have already put more money into it than it is worth. We cannot afford a new car and need to keep it running for another year if possible.

Its sounds like a transmission problem, but my wife's car had a bad intake gasket that caused the same problem!

The very first thing you need to do is a good tuneup including plugs, wires, rotor, cap, air and fuel filters and fix the exhaust. There is a good chance your problem will be solved. Note that your car MUST have an intact exhaust system or it will lose a lot of power.

1995 concorde 3.5 randomly dies and wont start. Then will start and run fine.

I had that symptom, along with the sudden unexpected downshift at speed.

Both problems disappeared after replacing the ignition switch.

Mazda Tribute 2002 engine cuts out randomly

I had a Mazda 626 with a similar problem, the car seemed to 'shut down' with no warning, even at highway speeds, as if I just turned the ignition key to 'Off'; After trying to fix it unsuccessfully by replacing several electrical parts, the problem was found to be a defective ignition switch, it was replaced and the problem went away.
